EDUCATION, TRAINING, OUTREACH AND PUBLISHING:WEBINARS - GIJN PRODUCED 32 WEBINARS IN EIGHT LANGUAGES IN 2021 WITH TOPICS RANGING FROM THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC AND JOURNALIST SAFETY TO ONLINE RESEARCH TECHNIQUES AND DISINFORMATION.NEWSLETTERS - GIJN PRODUCED AND DISTRIBUTED E-NEWSLETTERS OF THE LATEST TOOLS, EVENTS, AND NEWS IN INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM. THE NEWSLETTERS APPEARED IN NINE LANGUAGES AND REACHED AN AUDIENCE OF NEARLY 25,000.WORKSHOPS, TRAINING AND MENTORSHIP - GIJN RAN ONLINE WORKSHOPS ON SUCH TOPICS AS INTERNET SEARCH SKILLS AND MEDIA BUSINESS MANAGEMENT. RESOURCE CENTER - GIJN'S FREE ONLINE RESOURCE CENTER IS USED BY JOURNALISTS IN 100 COUNTRIES PER DAY IN 13 LANGUAGES (ENGLISH, ARABIC, BAHASA INDONESIA, BANGLA, CHINESE, FRENCH, HINDI, PORTUGUESE, RUSSIAN, SPANISH, TURKISH, GERMAN AND URDU). WITH OVER 1500 TIP SHEETS, VIDEOS AND REPORTING GUIDES, THE RESOURCE CENTER HAS BECOME FIRST-STOP SHOPPING FOR JOURNALISTS EMBARKING ON STORIES WORLDWIDE.HELP DESK - SINCE 2012, THE GIJN HELP DESK HAS RESPONDED TO NEARLY 13,000 REQUESTS FOR ASSISTANCE FROM AROUND THE WORLD. WITH ACCESS TO HUNDREDS OF EXPERTS ON INVESTIGATIVE TECHNIQUES, DATA JOURNALISM, NONPROFITS, FUNDING, SAFETY AND SECURITY, AND MORE, THE HELP DESK RESPONDS TO A WIDE RANGE OF REQUESTS.CAPACITY BUILDING - THROUGH GIJN ADVISORY SERVICES, GIJN OFFERS A RANGE OF RESOURCES, TRAINING, AND ASSESSMENTS FOR WATCHDOG MEDIA TO BUILD CAPACITY. THE GIJN TEAMS CAN EVALUATE AN ORGANIZATION'S EDITORIAL OPERATIONS, BUSINESS PRACTICES, FUNDRAISING, SECURITY AND LEGAL EXPOSURE, AND PROVIDE RECOMMENDATIONS TO STRENGTHEN SUSTAINABILITY. THE INITIATIVE DEVELOPED TWO ASSESSMENT TOOLS, THE INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM MEDIA ASSESSMENT PROGRAM, AND THE JOURNALISM SECURITY ASSESSMENT TOOL.GIJN ADVISORY SERVICES RAN THREE SUCCESSFUL PILOT PROJECTS IN ASIA IN 2021. THERE ARE REQUESTS FROM AFRICA, ASIA, AND THE MIDDLE EAST TO CONTINUE THE PROGRAM, AND GIJN IS WORKING TO SECURE ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR THIS. VIDEO TRAINING - GIJN PRODUCES VIDEO TRAINING SERIES ON INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM FEATURING SPECIALISTS IN PUBLIC RECORDS, DATA JOURNALISM, ONLINE SEARCH STRATEGY, FACT-CHECKING AND MORE TOPICS. GIJN VIDEOS HAVE BEEN TRANSLATED INTO ARABIC, CHINESE, RUSSIAN, SPANISH AND OTHER LANGUAGES. ON GIJN'S YOUTUBE CHANNEL IN 2021, VIEWERS WATCHED GIJN VIDEOS OVER 60,000 TIMES, TOTALING 4,600 HOURS.ONLINE PUBLISHING AND NETWORKING - GIJN RUNS PUBLISHING AND SOCIAL MEDIA FEEDS ON 20 PLATFORMS IN 13 LANGUAGES, FEATURING TRENDS, EVENTS, NEWS AND TECHNIQUES ON INVESTIGATIVE AND DATA JOURNALISM WORLDWIDE.DURING 2021, GIJN WEBSITES PUBLISHED 950 STORIES IN 14 LANGUAGES. ON AN AVERAGE DAY, VIEWERS FROM 140 COUNTRIES VISIT GIJN'S MAIN SITE. GIJN'S DAILY SOCIAL MEDIA FEEDS, PUBLISHED IN REGIONAL EDITIONS, RUN HUNDREDS OF ITEMS PER MONTH. GIJN'S AUDIENCE AND REACH TODAY ARE TRULY GLOBAL, WITH MORE THAN 370,000 PEOPLE IN 150 COUNTRIES FOLLOWING ITS WORK.OUTREACH - GIJN STAFF AND REPRESENTATIVES SPOKE AT 115 SESSIONS (BOTH ONLINE AND OFFLINE) IN 31 COUNTRIES DURING 2021. GIJN AND ITS CONFERENCES WERE CITED IN AT LEAST 950 STORIES IN 27 LANGUAGES.TRANSLATIONS - IN 2021, TRANSLATION BECAME ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING AREAS OF GIJN'S WORK. GIJN ADDED FIVE LANGUAGES TO ITS DAILY DISTRIBUTION -- BAHASA INDONESIA, HINDI, PORTUGUESE, TURKISH, AND URDU, JOINING ARABIC, BANGLA, CHINESE, ENGLISH, FRENCH, RUSSIAN, AND SPANISH. GIJN ALSO RAN TRANSLATION PROJECTS IN OTHER LANGUAGES SPOKEN BY TENS OF MILLIONS OF PEOPLE. DONE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ITS MEMBER ORGANIZATIONS, THESE INCLUDED HAUSA, KOREAN, JAPANESE, SINHALESE, TAMIL, AND THAI. IN ADDITION, GIJN EXPERIMENTED WITH TARGETED TRANSLATIONS INTO SEVERAL INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES (GUARANI, QUECHUA, AND YUCATEC MAYAN).MEMBERSHIP SERVICES - GIJN PROVIDES SERVICES TO ITS MEMBER ORGANIZATIONS, SUCH AS DISCOUNTED OR FREE SOFTWARE; PREFERRED ACCESS TO GIJN'S HELP DESK, RESOURCE CENTER, AND CONFERENCES; AND PRO BONO CONSULTING ON FUNDRAISING AND BUSINESS PRACTICES.AFGHANISTAN EMERGENCY PROJECT - GIJN PUBLISHED A GUIDE TO RESOURCES FOR EMERGENCY EVACUATION AND ASYLUM PROCESSES IN DARI AND PASHTO WITHIN THREE DAYS OF THE TALIBAN CAPTURING KABUL. THE GUIDE WAS ULTIMATELY VIEWED OVER 7,000 TIMES IN 102 COUNTRIES. AT THE SAME TIME, GIJN'S EMERGENCY TEAM WORKED WITH GOVERNMENTS, NGOS, AND OTHERS TO HELP EVACUATE JOURNALISTS FROM THE COUNTRY, RESPONDING TO MORE THAN 100 REQUESTS FOR ASSISTANCE.


ANNUAL CONFERENCE: GLOBAL INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM CONFERENCE - DUE TO THE GLOBAL SPREAD OF COVID-19, GIJN DECIDED TO MOVE ITS GLOBAL INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM CONFERENCE (GIJC21) ONLINE TO PROTECT ITS STAFF, SPEAKERS AND ATTENDEES AGAINST THE ENDURING THREAT OF THE PANDEMIC. GIJN'S FIRST ALL-VIRTUAL GIJC21 BROUGHT TOGETHER 1,668 ATTENDEES FROM A RECORD 144 COUNTRIES. ATTENDEES JOINED 77 SESSIONS OVER FIVE DAYS ON A VARIETY OF TOPICS, AS WELL AS TARGETED NETWORKING SESSIONS. THE CONFERENCE ATTRACTED AN EXTRAORDINARY 109 MILLION TWITTER IMPRESSIONS, REACHING AN ESTIMATE OF 32 MILLION PEOPLE WORLDWIDE. THE 2020 ANNUAL CONFERENCE WAS CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19.
