MLK HEALTH AND WELLNESS COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION MLK-CDC IS CHARGED WITH FACILITATING THE REVITALIZATION OF SOUTH LOS ANGELES THAT INCLUDES THE MLK MEDICAL CAMPUS IN REPURPOSING CONT ON SCH. O

MLK-CDC WORKING WITH THE MLK PEDIATRIC CLINIC NOW HOUSED IN A NEW BUILDING ON THE CAMPUS FOR CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE FACILITATED GRANTS OF OVER 75,000 IN 2023 FOR NEW FURNITURE, CHILDRENS BOOKS, AND FACILITATED A 25,000 ANNUAL GRANT FOR THE MLK OUTPATIENT CENTER MLK-OPC THAT USED THE FUNDS FOR PREVENTION OF CERVICAL CANCER BY SCREENING 2500 PAP SMEARS AND MORE THAN 4,500 MAMMOGRAMS. CERVICAL CANCER IS A PREVENTABLE DISEASE THROUGH VACCINATION AND SCREENING. THE POPULATION SERVED BY THE MLK-OPC IS MAJORITY BLACK AND HISPANIC - WHERE THERE IS A LARGE DISPARITY IN RATES OF DIAGNOSIS AND DEATH FROM CERVICAL CANCER COMPARED TO WHITE WOMEN.


IN 2023, MLK-CDCS PROGRAM THAT FOCUSED ON THE FACILITY EXPANSION OF THE MLK PEDIATRIC CLINIC FOR NEARLY FIVE YEARS, ACHIEVED ITS MISSION OF RELOCATING THE FOSTER CARE CLINIC FROM 50-YEAR-OLD CONSTRUCTION TRAILERS TO A NEWLY BUILT MODULAR BUILDING, NAMED THE JACQUELINE AVANT CHILDREN AND FAMILY CENTER. THE EXPANSION DOUBLED THE SIZE OF THE ORIGINAL SQUARE FOOTAGE FROM 12,000 TO 25,000 AND IT IS NOW FULLY OPERATIONAL. THE NEW THREE-STORY MODULAR BUILDING 50,000 SQ. FT. ALSO HOUSES THE SPECIAL NEEDS NETWORK AUTISM CENTER AND THE ST. JOHNS FAMILY CLINIC. THE THIRD FLOOR WILL HOUSE A CHILDRENS MENTAL HEALTH CENTER FOCUSED ON TRAUMA AND IS EXPECTED TO OPEN IN LATE 2024.
