Describe the Organization's Mission:

Part 3 - Line 1

SUR LEGAL COLLABORATIVE, AN IMMIGRANT AND WORKER RIGHTS ORGANIZATION BASED IN GEORGIA, STRIVES TO END LABOR ABUSE OF WORKERS AND TO ABOLISH IMMIGRANT DETENTION.

Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

RAPID RESPONSE PROGRAM: SUR LEGAL COLLABORATIVE WAS PART OF A RAPID RESPONSE EFFORT IN THE AFTERMATH OF A DEADLY NITROGEN LEAK THAT KILLED SIX POULTRY WORKERS AT A POULTRY PROCESSING FACILITY IN GAINESVILLE, GEORGIA. THIS RAPID RESPONSE EFFORT INCLUDED EDUCATING WORKERS ON THEIR LABOR RIGHTS, SCREENING WORKERS FOR LABOR VIOLATIONS AND IMMIGRATION RELIEF, REPRESENTING WORKERS IN INTERVIEWS WITH THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION (OSHA) AS WELL AS FILING OSHA COMPLAINTS AFTER A SECOND CHEMICAL LEAK TOOK PLACE ONLY 6 WEEKS AFTER THE NITROGEN LEAK. SUR ALSO REPRESENTS MANY OF THESE WORKERS ON APPLICATIONS FOR IMMIGRATION RELIEF AND EMPLOYMENT AUTHORIZATION.

MASS DE-CARCERATION PROGRAM: SUR LEGAL COLLABORATIVE PARTNERED WITH THE COALITION TO SHUTDOWN ICE IN GEORGIA WITH A MASS RELEASE EFFORT AT IRWIN COUNTY DETENTION CENTER(ICDC), A PRIVATE PRISON CONTRACTED BY IMMIGRATION AND CUSTOMS ENFORCEMENT (ICE) TO DETAIN IMMIGRANTS. ICDC MADE HEADLINES IN LATE 2020 AFTER A WHISTLEBLOWER SHARED THAT IMMIGRANT WOMEN DETAINED AT ICDC WERE SUBJECTED TO NON-CONSENSUAL GYNECOLOGICAL PROCEDURES. SUR LEGAL PROVIDED DIRECT REPRESENTATION TO THE LAST THREE CISWOMEN DETAINED AT ICDC, INCLUDING A WOMAN WHO WAS A VICTIM OF LABOR TRAFFICKING. BECAUSE OF SUR LEGAL'S REPRESENTATION OF HER, SHE WAS ABLE TO GET A T VISA AND REUNITE WITH HER DAUGHTER.

LABOR RIGHTS PROGRAM: SUR LEGAL COLLABORATIVE PROVIDED VIRTUAL KNOW YOUR RIGHTS TRAININGS TO GRASSROOTS GROUPS, COMMUNITIES OF IMMIGRANTS AND WORKERS, ON TOPICS RANGING FROM LABOR RIGHTS REGARDLESS OF IMMIGRATION STATUS, THE TOP COVID-19 RELATED OSHA CITATIONS AGAINST EMPLOYERS, AND HOW TO FILE EFFECTIVE OSHA COMPLAINTS. SUR LEGAL ALSO CREATED SOCIAL MEDIA INFOGRAPHICS AND FLYERS COVERING THESE TOPICS. FINALLY, SUR LEGAL REPRESENTED WORKERS ON LABOR COMPLAINTS INCLUDING AN OSHA COMPLAINT WHERE A WORKER CONTRACTED COVID-19 AT A POULTRY FACILITY AND A NATIONAL LABOR RELATIONS ACT COMPLAINT AGAINST AN EMPLOYER WHO TERMINATED AND THREATENED WORKERS AFTER EXERCISING THEIR RIGHTS.
