TO PROTECT AND PROMOTE THE BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS OF IMMIGRANTS OF ALL NATIONALITIES AT THE LOCAL, STATE AND NATIONAL LEVELS.

ADVOCACYA FEDERAL JUDGE BLOCKED #SB168, AN ANTI-IMMIGRATION BILL AIMED AT BANNING SANCTUARY CITIES IN FLORIDA. PORTIONS OF THE LAW WERE DECLARED UNCONSTITUTIONAL AND DISCRIMINATORY. AI JUSTICE SERVED AS A PLAINTIFF ORGANIZATION IN THE LITIGATION.AI JUSTICE AND CO-COUNSEL REACHED A SETTLEMENT WITH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MANDATING FEDERAL COURT OVERSIGHT OF COMPLIANCE WITH CDC PANDEMIC GUIDELINES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS IN SOUTH FLORIDA'S ICE DETENTION FACILITIES.AI JUSTICE AND CO-COUNSEL REACHED A SETTLEMENT WITH GLADES COUNTY DETENTION CENTER FOR ITS DISCRIMINATORY AND ABUSIVE PRACTICES THAT PREVENTED DETAINED MUSLIM IMMIGRANTS FROM PRACTICING THEIR FAITH, INCLUDING BEING REGULARLY DENIED ACRES TO HALAL FOOD AND PRAYER RUGS. THE PLAINTIFFS WILL RECEIVE DAMAGES FOR THE DENIAL OF THEIR RIGHT TO OBSERVE THEIR RELIGION.THE LITIGATION AND DETENTION PROGRAMS REPRESENTED A 19-YEAR-OLD WHO HAD BEEN DETAINED BY IMMIGRATION AND CUSTOMS ENFORCEMENT FOR NEARLY 300 DAYS AND WAS ABLE TO OBTAIN HIS RELEASE THROUGH A HABEAS PETITION FILED IN FEDERAL COURT. AS PART OF A WORKING GROUP, AI JUSTICE AND PARTNERS PREPARED COMPLAINTS TO THE DHS OFFICE OF CIVIL RIGHTS AND CIVIL LIBERTIES REGARDING THE CONDITIONS AT GLADES COUNTY JAIL, DUE TO DOCUMENTED INSTANCES OF MEDICAL NEGLECT, RACIAL DISCRIMINATION, VERBAL HARASSMENT, SEXUAL HARASSMENT, LACK OF ADEQUATE COVID-19 PROTOCOLS, UNSANITARY DORMITORY CONDITIONS, AND LACK OF ACCESS TO BASIC HYGIENE SUPPLIES.IN OCTOBER OF 2021, THE LITIGATION PROGRAM RELEASED A REPORT ON THE CONDITIONS IN ICE DETENTION DURING COVID-19.


DIRECT SERVICESIN 2021, AMERICANS FOR IMMIGRANT JUSTICE (AI JUSTICE) CONTINUED TO SERVE THE COMMUNITY'S MOST VULNERABLE IMMIGRANTS DESPITE THE CHALLENGES CAUSED BY THE PANDEMIC. THE CHILDREN'S LEGAL PROGRAM SERVED 3,237 MINORS, THE FAMILY DEFENSE PROGRAM SERVED 1,209 INDIVIDUALS IN THE COMMUNITY, THE DETENTION PROGRAM SERVED 316 DETAINED INDIVIDUALS, THE LUCHA PROGRAM SERVED 835 SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND/OR SEXUAL ASSAULT AND THE LITIGATION PROGRAM REPRESENTED 10 INDIVIDUALS. ADDITIONALLY, THE FAMILY DEFENSE PROGRAM PROVIDED KNOW YOUR RIGHTS PRESENTATIONS (KYRS) FOR 85 INDIVIDUALS AND SCREENING CLINICS FOR 741.
