THE PICKIN ON THE PLAINS BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL IS A THREE DAY EVENT HELD THE THIRD WEEKEND OF JULY AT THE THOMAS COUNTY KANSAS FAIRGROUNDS. A FULL SLATE OF LOCAL AND MIDWEST AREA BANDS PERFORM UNDER AN AIR-COOLED CANOPY STARTING FRIDAY EVENING THROUGH SUNDAY. YOUTH ACTIVITIES, A CRAFT FAIR AND MUSICAL WORKSHOPS ARE ALSO PART OF THE ACTIVITIES. THE FESTIVAL PROMOTES (A) AN APPRECIATION OF THE FREE ENTERPRISE SYSTEM, (B) COORDINATES THE EFFORTS OF COMMERCE, INDUSTRY AND THE PROFESSIONS IN MAINTAINING AND STRENGHTENING A SOUND AND HEALTHY BUSINESS CLIMATE IN THE AREA; (C) SPONSORSHIP OF AGGRESSIVE PROGRAMS OF WORK AND STIMULATES ACTIVITIES THAT WILL PROVIDE FOR FULL DEVELOPMENT AND EMPLOYMENT OF OUR HUMAN AND ECONOMIC RESOURCES; (D) CREATIVE BUSINESS LEADERSHIP AND EFFECTIVE COORDINATION OF ALL INTERESTED PARTIES IN SOLVING COMMUNITY PROBLEMS AND IN INITIATING CONSTRUCTIVE COMMUNITY ACTION; (E) CREATING BROAD UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATION OF THE GREAT OPPORTUNITIES IN THOMAS COUNTY AND THE ADVANTAGES AND ASSETS OF OUR COMMUNITY.
