THE MISSION OF CITY BALLET IS TO PROVIDE EXCELLENCE IN PROFESSIONAL BALLET FOR CULTURAL ENHANCEMENT THROUGH PERFORMANCES, EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS TO DIVERSE COMMUNITIES AND AUDIENCES.

CITY BALLET, UNDER THE ARTISTIC DIRECTION OF STEVEN WISTRICH, PRESENTED A SEASON, TITLED 'ON THE TOWN', OF FIVE PRODUCTIONS PERFORMED IN THEATERS IN THE SAN DIEGO AREA, AS THE COMPANY'S HOME THEATER, THE HISTORIC SPRECKELS THEATRE, IS UNDERGOING RENOVATIONS. PRODUCTIONS INCLUDED PREMIERE WORKS CHOREOGRAPHED BY GEOFF GONZALEZ IN "ON THE MOVE", "CLASSICS IN CONCERT", "THE NUTCRACKER" ACCOMPANIED BY THE CITY BALLET ORCHESTRA, RHAPSODY IN BLUE AND ELIZABETH WISTRICH'S FULL LENGTH "DON QUIXOTE" ACCOMPANIED BY THE CITY BALLET ORCHESTRA ATTENDED BY 7,323 PATRONS. AN ARTS ENGAGEMENT, TITLED "LOVE EN L'AIR" WAS ATTENDED BY 125 PATRONS AT THE SAN DIEGO AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM.


DURING THE 2021-22 SEASON, CITY BALLET CONTINUED TO OFFER THE FOLLOWING EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS: 1) 'BALLET GOES TO SCHOOL' PROGRAM OFFERED VIRTUAL EXCERPTS FROM BALLETS TO AREA TEACHERS TO AUGMENT THEIR INSTRUCTION, SINCE SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES AND FIELD TRIPS WERE NOT YET PERMITTED BY THE SCHOOL DISTRICT DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. 2) 'DISCOVER A DANCER' PROGRAM OF A BALLET RESIDENCY FOR AT-RISK SCHOOL CHILDREN WAS EXPANDED TO FOUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND EXPANDED FROM WEEKLY TO BI-WEEKLY CLASSES, CULMINATING IN A PRESENTATION FOR FAMILY MEMBERS AND FRIENDS. A TOTAL OF 87 CHILDREN PARTICIPATED. 3) SUMMER INTENSIVE PROGRAM, A THREE-WEEK INTENSIVE FOR CAREER-MINDED BALLET STUDENTS, WAS RE-INSTATED AFTER THE PANDEMIC WITH PRINCIPAL TEACHERS FROM NEW YORK CITY BALLET AS GUEST TEACHERS. 4) OUTREACH PRESENTATIONS WERE GIVEN AT QUALCOMM, ARTWALK, ART GALLERIES AND AREA LIBRARIES.
