IEARN (INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION AND RESOURCE NETWORK) IS THE U.S. ORGANIZATION OF THE WORLDWIDE IEARN INTERNATIONAL NETWORK. THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF IEARN IS TO ASSIST YOUTH (WITH A FOCUS ON ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION AS WELL AS YOUTH SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS) TO USE TELECOMMUNICATIONS TO WORK ON PROJECTS DESIGNED TO MAKE A MEANINGFUL CONTRIBUTION TO THE HEALTH AND WELFARE OF PEOPLE AND THE PLANET.

IEARN GLOBAL PROJECTSIN 2019, IEARN TEACHERS AND STUDENTS AROUND THE WORLD CONNECTED ONLINE, COLLABORATED ON GLOBAL PROJECTS, AND BUILT FRIENDSHIPS AS THEY ADDRESSED SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGES IN THEIR COMMUNITY. TEACHERS AND STUDENTS DESIGNED AND FACILITATED MORE THAN 100 PROJECTS ALIGNED WITH THE UN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS.IEARN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTIEARN-USA PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERVICES PLAY A KEY ROLE IN SUPPORTING EDUCATORS TO BECOME GLOBAL EDUCATION LEADERS. THEY CREATE A PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY, PROVIDE SUPPORT, AND GUIDE EDUCATORS IN INTEGRATING GLOBAL PROJECTS INTO THEIR CURRICULUM. IN 2019, IEARN-USA'S PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDED ONLINE COURSES, VIRTUAL WORKSHOPS, WEBINARS, AND DIGITAL RESOURCES SHARING TO PROVIDE TEACHERS WITH HANDS-ON TOOLS AND SKILLS TO EMPOWER THEM TO BUILD LONG-LASTING GLOBAL CONNECTIONS.FROM FEBRUARY TO MAY 2019, IEARN-USA CONDUCTED THE IEARN ONLINE EDUCATOR COURSE, INTRODUCTION TO ONLINE COLLABORATION AND GLOBAL PROJECTS. THE EIGHT-WEEK ONLINE COURSE TAUGHT PARTICIPANTS ABOUT GLOBAL PROJECT-BASED LEARNING WITH IEARN. IT PREPARED THEM TO PARTICIPATE IN A VIRTUAL EXCHANGE PROJECT WITH THEIR CLASS, AND TO COLLABORATE WITH OTHER TEACHERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. THROUGH THE COURSE, TEACHERS LEARNED HOW TO INTEGRATE COLLABORATIVE, PROJECT-BASED LEARNING INTO THEIR TEACHING PRACTICE WHILE ADDRESSING LOCAL AND/OR NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS. PARTICIPANTS ALSO DISCUSSED WAYS TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR ONLINE GLOBAL COMMUNICATION AND PROJECT WORK, AND TO EVALUATE THEIR LEARNING.GLOBAL EDUCATION AMBASSADORSIEARN-USA'S LEADERSHIP PROGRAM FOR U.S. EDUCATORS, NAMED THE GLOBAL EDUCATION AMBASSADORS (GEAS), ARE A SELECT GROUP OF VOLUNTEER EDUCATORS AND ADMINISTRATORS WHO PLAY A CRITICAL ROLE IN SUPPORTING IEARN'S EFFORTS TO EXPAND GLOBAL EDUCATION. THESE AMBASSADORS PROMOTED GLOBAL EDUCATION AND VIRTUAL EXCHANGE, LED ONLINE PROJECTS AND COURSE FACILITATION, CONDUCTED WORKSHOPS, CREATED RESOURCES, AND ORGANIZED AND PRESENTED SPECIAL GLOBAL EDUCATION INITIATIVES AND CONFERENCES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. THE KENNEDY-LUGAR YOUTH EXCHANGE AND STUDY (YES) PROGRAMFUNDED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE AND SPONSORED BY THE BUREAU OF EDUCATIONAL AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS, THE YES PROGRAM IS AN ACADEMIC YEAR EXCHANGE PROGRAM FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM COUNTRIES WITH SIGNIFICANT MUSLIM POPULATIONS. THE YES PROGRAM IS MANAGED BY VARIOUS PARTNERS IN THE U.S. AND INTERNATIONALLY. IEARN MANAGES YES PROGRAMMING FOR BANGLADESH, CAMEROON, ISRAEL (ARAB COMMUNITIES), LIBERIA, MALI, PAKISTAN, SIERRA LEONE, AND SURINAME, AND ADVISES AND MANAGES VIRTUAL EXCHANGE ACTIVITIES, PROGRAM WEBSITES, SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGNS AND WEBINARS FOR PARTICIPANTS AND ALUMNI. IN 2019, YES PROGRAM RECRUITED AND SELECTED 173 STUDENTS FROM THE EIGHT COUNTRIES LISTED ABOVE TO TRAVEL TO THE UNITED STATES FOR AN EXCHANGE YEAR.IN 2019, THE YES PROGRAM CELEBRATED ITS 15TH ANNIVERSARY. AS A PART OF THE ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION, IEARN-USA LEAD AN ONLINE LOGO COMPETITION FOR STUDENTS AND ALUMNI TO SUBMIT AND VOTE FOR COMMEMORATIVE 15TH ANNIVERSARY YES LOGOS AND CREATED VIDEOS HIGHLIGHTING EACH COUNTRY'S, CULTURE, ALUMNI PROJECTS, AND IMPACT OF THE YES PROGRAM, WHICH WERE FEATURED ON THE YES WEBSITE AND SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. ADDITIONALLY, IEARN-USA ORGANIZED THE YES SDG (UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS) VIRTUAL SUMMIT WHERE FIFTEEN YES ALUMNI FROM NINE DIFFERENT COUNTRIES LEAD ONLINE SESSIONS ABOUT THE VARIOUS SDGS, PROMOTED THE SDG-ALIGNED WORK THEY DO IN THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES, AND SHARE STRATEGIES AND TIPS TO HELP OTHER YES ALUMNI TAKE THEIR PROJECTS FROM PAPER AND PUT IT INTO PRACTICE. IEARN-USA ALSO ORGANIZED THE DIGITAL STORYTELLING WORKSHOP (DSW) IN DHAKA, BANGLADESH IN OCTOBER, WHICH TAUGHT 18 ALUMNI FROM 11 COUNTRIES DIGITAL STORYTELLING TECHNIQUES. IEARN-USA ALSO LED FIVE WEBINARS FOR THE ENTIRE YES ALUMNI COMMUNITY.NATIONAL SECURITY LANGUAGE INITIATIVE FOR YOUTH (NSLI-Y)IEARN-USA CONTINUED ITS PARTNERSHIP WITH AMERICAN COUNCILS FOR INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION TO IMPLEMENT THE NSLI-Y PROGRAM. NSLI-Y IS A U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES MERIT-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ELIGIBLE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND RECENT HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES TO LEARN LESS COMMONLY TAUGHT LANGUAGES IN SUMMER AND ACADEMIC-YEAR OVERSEAS IMMERSION PROGRAMS. IN 2019, IEARN-USA IMPLEMENTED SUMMER AND ACADEMIC YEAR PROGRAMS FOR 142 STUDENTS TO STUDY ABROAD IN INDIA, KOREA, MOROCCO AND TAIWAN. IEARN-USA ALSO MANAGED THE NSLI-Y INTERACTIVE WEBSITE (HTTP://NSLIY-INTERACTIVE.ORG/), WHICH SHOWCASES LANGUAGE LEARNING AND CROSS-CULTURAL EXPERIENCES OF NSLI-Y STUDENTS AND ALUMNI. IN 2019, IEARN ORGANIZED SIX VIRTUAL-INTERACTIVE EVENTS THAT CONNECTED NSLI-Y STUDENTS ABROAD WITH YOUTH, EDUCATORS AND LANGUAGE LEARNERS IN THE U.S. FOR FURTHER CULTURAL EXCHANGE AND LANGUAGE LEARNING. THIS YEAR, THE EVENTS FOCUSED ON TOPICS RANGING FROM CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND SELF-GROWTH IN MOLDOVA, TO LANGUAGE LEARNING STRATEGIES, TO CITIZEN AMBASSADORSHIP.SUMMER SISTERSIN THE SUMMER OF 2019, 22 GIFTED AND DYNAMIC PAKISTANI HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS FROM LOW TO MIDDLE INCOME BACKGROUNDS RECEIVED SCHOLARSHIPS TO ATTEND PRE-COLLEGE SUMMER PROGRAMS AT PRESTIGIOUS AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES, INCLUDING HARVARD, THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO, BROWN UNIVERSITY AND BABSON COLLEGE. THE EXCHANGE PROGRAM HAS BEEN IN OPERATION SINCE 2013, AND IS PART OF THE "LET GIRLS LEARN" INITIATIVE, WHICH IS FUNDED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE AND IS ADMINISTERED BY A CONSORTIUM OF PARTNERS, INCLUDING AMERICAN UNIVERSITY, IEARN-PAKISTAN, AND IEARN-USA. FOR EXAMPLE, ALUMNI HAVE BEEN CHOSEN TO REPRESENT PAKISTAN AT THE GLOBAL YOUTH AMBASSADOR SUMMIT AND THE EVEREST INTERNATIONAL MODEL UN IN NEPAL. DESIGN SQUAD GLOBAL INVENTING GREEN INDIA CLUBSIN JULY 2019, IEARN INDIA LAUNCHED THE DSG INVENTING GREEN CLUBS IN PUNE AND MUMBAI. DESIGN SQUAD GLOBAL EMPOWERS MIDDLE SCHOOL KIDS TO SOLVE REAL-WORLD PROBLEMS AND UNDERSTAND THE IMPACT OF ENGINEERING IN A GLOBAL CONTEXT. REFRESHED WEEKLY WITH CHALLENGES, VIDEOS, AND ACTIVITIES, THE WEBSITE IS ONE OF THE ONLY PLACES ON THE WEB WHERE KIDS CAN SHARE THEIR ENGINEERING IDEAS WITH OTHER KIDS. AT DESIGN SQUAD GLOBAL'S ONLINE HUB, KIDS CAN SHARE THEIR ENGINEERING IDEAS AND SKETCHES WITH OTHER KIDS, PLAY GAMES (LIKE THE FLOOD PREVENTION SIMULATION "DON'T FLOOD THE FIDGITS!"), AND TAKE ON GLOBAL CHALLENGES (INVENTING A WAY TO USE LESS WATER).
