ACQUIRING CONSERVATION LAND AND PROVIDING EDUCATION, STEWARDSHIP, AND RECREATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR THE SPOKANE AREA.

CONSERVATION LAND ACQUISITION & STEWARDSHIP: THE DHC ACQUIRES AND MANAGES CONSERVATION LANDS. DHC OWNS OVER 1000 ACRES, HAS CONSERVATION EASEMENTS ON 25 ACRES AND CO-MANAGES THE DISHMAN HILLS NATURAL RESOURCE CONSERVATION AREA WITH SPOKANE COUNTY AND WASHINGTON STATE. THE TOTAL PROTECTED LANDS IS 3200 ACRES. THE VOLUNTEER STEWARD PROGRAM EDUCATES USERS AND HELPS WITH STEWARDSHIP. PROJECTS INCLUDE TRAIL CONSTRUCTION, SIGNAGE, ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION, WEED CONTROL, AND TRAILHEAD IMPROVEMENTS. DHC PROVIDED OVER 3500 HOURS OF VOLUNTEER WORK. STEWARDSHIP IS GUIDED BY FOREST MANAGEMENT PLANS WITH A GOAL OF RESTORING NATIVE HABITAT.


EDUCATION AND PUBLICATIONS: THE KIDS IN THE HILLS CURRICULUM WAS VOLUNTEER LED. THE DHC PUBLISHES A NEWSLETTER AND MAINTAINS A WEBSITE TO PROMOTE CONSERVATION THROUGHOUT SPOKANE COUNTY. THE NEWSLETTER HAS ARTICLES ON CONSERVATION AND ECOLOGY, CURRENT EVENTS AND ACQUISITIONS. THE DHC USES EMAIL, MAIL, VIRTUAL PRESENTATIONS AND SOCIAL MEDIA TO PUBLICIZE PROGRAMS.


STEWARDSHIP & FIRE PREVENTION MEASURES: TREE AND BRUSH REMOVAL, INSTALLATION OF GUTTERS, FIRE RESISTANT LANDSCAPING AROUND STRUCTURES.
