ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION -SEATTLE AUDUBON'S ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS CONNECT WITH MORE THAN 1,500 CHILDREN AND ADULTS EACH YEAR. SPECIFICALLY, THE PROGRAMS INCLUDE:1. NATURE CAMP, A SUMMER EDUCATION EXPERIENCE FOR APPROXIMATELY 400 CHILDREN PER YEAR.2. ADULT EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES, INCLUDING BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE, AND ADVANCED BIRDING CLASSES ON A WIDE RANGE OF BIRD, WILDLIFE, EQUITY, AND CONSERVATION TOPICS.3. FIELD TRIPS AND NEIGHBORHOOD BIRD OUTINGS PROVIDE ADULTS WITH IN-FIELD EXPERIENCE TO IDENTIFY, LEARN ABOUT, AND ENJOY BIRDS AND BIRDING AS PART OF A COMMUNITY. (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O)4. YOUNG BIRDERS, A MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL BIRDING PROGRAM WHICH INCLUDES IN-FIELD EDUCATION, FIELD TRIPS, AND EXPOSURE TO CAREERS IN THE FIELD OF CONSERVATION.5. FLEDGLINGS & FRIENDS, A PLAY-BASED BIRD AND NATURE EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR PRESCHOOL CHILDREN.6. SCHOOL OUTREACH AND KIT RENTALS PROVIDE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOL GROUPS WITH CURRICULUM AND MATERIALS TO OFFER IN-CLASS BIRD AND WILDLIFE EDUCATION.


URBAN CONSERVATION SEATTLE AUDUBON WORKS WITH DOZENS OF PARTNERS TO DEVELOP STRATEGIES AND PROGRAMS THAT REDUCE URBAN HAZARDS TO BIRDS, PRIORITIZING BIRD-SAFE BUILDING PRACTICES, REDUCING PESTICIDE USE, AND PROTECTING AND GROWING URBAN FORESTS AND GREEN SPACES. SPECIFIC PROGRAMS INCLUDE:1. SEATTLE AUDUBON PARTNERS WITH CAPITOL HILL ECODISTRICT LEADING THE CAPITOL HILL CONNECTIONS PROGRAM, WHICH IS WORKING TO ENHANCE HABITAT QUALITY AND CONNECTIVITY AND MAKE THE NEIGHBORHOOD A NATIONAL MODEL FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AND COMMUNITY HEALTH.2. SEATTLE AUDUBON SERVES ON SEATTLE'S URBAN FORESTRY COMMISSION, BRINGING A VOICE FOR BIRDS TO THE TABLE FOR KEY DECISION-MAKING AROUND OUR URBAN FOREST. (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O)WE ADVOCATE FOR A STRONGER, SMARTER, AND SIMPLER TREE PROTECTION ORDINANCE, FUNDING FOR THE GREEN SEATTLE PARTNERSHIP, AND SCIENCE-BASED URBAN FORESTRY MANAGEMENT.3. SEATTLE AUDUBON ADVOCATES FOR POLICY AND ACTIONS THAT ARE GOOD FOR BIRDS AND PEOPLE, INCLUDING BIRD-SAFE BUILDING LEGISLATION, TREE CANOPY POLICY CHANGES, PROTECTING THE ARCTIC NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE FROM OIL AND GAS LEASING, SAFER OIL TRANSPORTATION IN PUGET SOUND, AND FULLY FUNDING WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE.4. SEATTLE AUDUBON LEADS SEATTLE'S URBAN BIRD TREATY CITY GROUP, KNOWN AS THE SEATTLE BIRD CONSERVATION PARTNERSHIP, WHICH INCLUDES LOCAL NON-PROFIT AND CITY, STATE, AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT PARTNERS. THE GROUP'S GOALS ARE TO ENHANCE HABITAT, REDUCE URBAN HAZARDS, AND ENGAGE OUR LOCAL COMMUNITIES IN BIRD CONSERVATION. 5. SEATTLE AUDUBON IS AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE MARBLED MURRELET SURVIVAL PROJECT.


COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTSEATTLE AUDUBON DELIVERS A VARIETY OF STAFF-LED AND VOLUNTEER-POWERED PROGRAMS TO CONNECT MEMBERS AND THE WIDER COMMUNITY TO ALL THINGS BIRD-RELATED, INCLUDING BIRDING BOOKS, RESOURCE GUIDES, FIELD TRIPS, BINOCULARS, AND CLASSES. OUR NATURE SHOP IN THE WEDGWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD OF SEATTLE IS AVAILABLE SEVEN DAYS A WEEK TO ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT APPRECIATING, UNDERSTANDING, AND PROTECTING BIRDS.


COMMUNITY SCIENCESEATTLE AUDUBON MOBILIZES VOLUNTEERS THROUGHOUT THE REGION TO MAINTAIN FIVE COMMUNITY SCIENCE PROJECTS TO MONITOR THE STATUS OF LOCAL BIRD POPULATIONS. 1. NEIGHBORHOOD BIRD PROJECT MONITORS BIRD SPECIES DIVERSITY IN URBAN PARKS AND GREENSPACES THROUGHOUT THE SEATTLE AREA THANKS TO THE WORK OF COMMUNITY SCIENTISTS, AND EMPOWERS COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO BECOME ADVOCATES FOR WILDLIFE HABITAT CONSERVATION.2. THE SEATTLE BIRD COLLISION MONITORING PROJECT IS A COMMUNITY SCIENCE INITIATIVE THAT AIMS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND AND PREVENT BIRD WINDOW COLLISIONS IN THE SEATTLE AREA.3. DBIRD.ORG IS AN ONLINE TOOL THAT HELPS SEATTLE AUDUBON TRACK HUMAN-RELATED CAUSES OF BIRD MORTALITY AND INJURY. 4. CLIMATE WATCH EXPLORES HOW NORTH AMERICAN BIRDS ARE RESPONDING TO CLIMATE CHANGE. SEATTLE AUDUBON SUPPORTS THIS PROJECT LOCALLY FOR NATIONAL AUDUBON.5. THE CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT (CBC) AND FEEDER WATCH IS A PROGRAM OF NATIONAL AUDUBON TO COLLECT DATA ON WINTERING BIRD POPULATIONS. SEATTLE AUDUBON ADMINISTERS OUR LOCAL CBC ON BEHALF OF NATIONAL AUDUBON.6. THE PUGET SOUND SEABIRD SURVEY (PSSS) GATHERED VALUABLE DATA ON WINTERING SEABIRD POPULATIONS IN PUGET SOUND, STRAIT OF JUAN DE FUCA, AND WATERS SURROUNDING THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS.
