Describe the Organization's Mission:

Part 3 - Line 1

PIKE MARKET SENIOR CENTER AND FOOD BANK ("THE CENTER") SERVES THE BASIC NEEDS OF THE LOW-INCOME POPULATION OF THE PIKE PLACE MARKET AND DOWNTOWN SEATTLE NEIGHBORHOODS. THE SENIOR CENTER PROVIDES SERVICES TO THE OLDER, LOW-INCOME COMMUNITY TO ADDRESS NEEDS RESULTING FROM PHYSICAL DISABILITY, SOCIAL ISOLATION, INADEQUATE NUTRITION, AND THE LACK OF OPPORTUNITY TO ENGAGE IN MEANINGFUL ACTIVITY OR TO LEARN NEW SKILLS. THE FOOD BANK ALSO PROVIDES SERVICES TO LOW-INCOME AND HOMELESS PEOPLE OF ALL AGES TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEMS RESULTING FROM INADEQUATE NUTRITION AND ISOLATION IN THOSE COMMUNITIES.

Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

THE PIKE MARKET FOOD BANK (PMFB) SERVES INDIVIDUALS IN DOWNTOWN SEATTLE, SUPPLEMENTING FOOD SECURITY FOR A DIVERSE POPULATION OF LOW-INCOME AND HOMELESS CLIENTS. PMFB SERVES PEOPLE OF ALL AGES, BUT A MAJORITY OF CLIENTS ARE SENIORS. IN 2021 THE PIKE MARKET FOOD BANK DISTRIBUTED 34,291 BAGS OF FREE GROCERIES AND READY-TO-EAT PRE-PACKED BAGS, AND MADE (OR FACILITATED) 18,047 HOME DELIVERIES TO PEOPLE WHO ARE UNABLE TO VISIT.

THE PIKE MARKET SENIOR CENTER OFFERS A RANGE OF SERVICES TO PROMOTE HEALTHY AGING. OVER 90% OF THE SENIORS ARE LOW-INCOME AND NEARLY HALF ARE HOMELESS. CLIENTS CAN ACCESS ONE-ON-ONE SOCIAL WORK ASSISTANCE AND A RANGE OF HEALTH-PROMOTING AND SOCIALIZING ACTIVITIES. ALL THESE SERVICES AND ACTIVITIES ARE OFFERED FREE OF CHARGE.

THE MEALS PROGRAM OF THE PIKE MARKET SENIOR CENTER PROVIDED OVER 55,000 FREE, NUTRITIOUS BREAKFASTS, LUNCHES AND DINNERS TO OLDER ADULTS (55 AND UP) IN 2021. MEALS ARE SERVED SEVEN DAYS PER WEEK. MANY OF THE PIKE MARKET SENIOR CENTER'S CLIENTS HAVE LITTLE OR NO INCOME, ARE HOMELESS, OR LIVE ALONE. THESE ARE FACTORS THAT CAN RESULT IN POOR NUTRITION AND SOCIAL ISOLATION. TO ADDRESS THESE ISSUES - AND WHEN THE PUBLIC HEALTH SITUATION ALLOWS - WE SERVE MEALS IN A CONGREGATE SETTING AND FOCUS ON THE NUTRITIONAL CONTENT OF THE MENU. THE MENU IS DEVELOPED WITH A REGISTERED DIETITIAN TO ENSURE THAT EACH MEAL PROVIDES 1/3 OF THE RDA OF SEVEN MACRO-NUTRIENTS RECOMMENDED FOR OLDER ADULTS (PROTEIN, FIBER, CALCIUM AND VITAMINS A, C, B6 AND B12). ADDITIONALLY, ALL MEALS CONTAIN LESS THAN 1/3 OF THE RDA OF SODIUM, SUGAR AND FAT.
