THE DIVERSITY PLEDGE INSTITUTE OPERATES A FREE MENTORSHIP, TRAINING AND CAREER-ADVANCEMENT PROGRAM FOR JOURNALISTS, WITH EMPHASIS ON PEOPLE OF COLOR AND MEMBERS OF THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY. DPI ADDRESSES NEWSROOM DIVERSITY BY WORKING WITH EMPLOYERS TO IMPROVE THE HIRING AND RETENTION OF JOURNALISTS OF COLOR. DPI ALSO IDENTIFIES SKILLED JOURNALISTS OF COLOR AND PREPARES THEM FOR WHAT'S NEXT. WE ALSO TRAIN NEWSROOMS THAT HIRED US TO HELP THEM LAND THE RIGHT CANDIDATE.

THE DIVERSITY PLEDGE INSTITUTE EXPANDED OUR LEARNING CIRCLES AND PARTNERED WITH ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY'S WALTER CRONKITE SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION TO LAUNCH A SERIES OF INITIATIVES TO HELP IMPROVE DIVERSITY, INCLUSION AND RETENTION THROUGHOUT THE JOURNALISM AND STRATEGIC COMMUNICATION INDUSTRIES. THIS WAS OUR FIRST ATTEMPT AT LIVE EVENTS, WHERE WE OFFERED THE FOLLOWING WORKSHOPS TO THE STUDENT BODY: 1. TRANSITIONING FROM THE CLASSROOM TO THE WORKPLACE 2. PRODUCT THINKING FOR TODAY'S JOURNALIST 3. HOW TO SCORE YOUR FIRST FULL-TIME JOURNALISM JOB 4. PROTECTING YOUR IDENTITY IN A DIGITAL AGE 5. OWNING YOUR BEAT/SOURCE BUILDINGWE PARTNERED WITH THE INSTITUTE FOR NONPROFIT NEWS (INN) TO EXPLORE HOW NONPROFIT NEWS ORGANIZATIONS ARE BUILDING MORE DIVERSE, MORE EQUITABLE AND MORE INCLUSIVE PLACES TO WORK. THE CASE STUDIES PRODUCED PROVIDE AN IMPORTANT FIRST STEP IN UNDERSTANDING HOW NEWS OUTLETS CURRENTLY UNDERSTAND AND PRACTICE DEI WHILE ALSO PROVIDING CONTEXT ON THE CHALLENGES THAT NEWS OUTLETS FACE IN ENGAGING WITH THIS WORK.WE ALSO PROVIDED HUNDREDS OF JOURNALISTS WITH FREE MENTORSHIP AND DEDICATED 43 DAYS WORTH OF TRAINING AND SUPPORT.
