Part 3 - Line 4a
ONE-YEAR FELLOWSHIPS: NEW SCIENCE PROVIDED 12-MONTH FELLOWSHIPS FOR TALENTED YOUNG SCIENTISTS TO PURSUE AMBITIOUS, EARLY-STAGE IDEAS IN THE BASIC LIFE SCIENCES. EACH FELLOW RECEIVED A STIPEND, PROJECT FUNDING, HEALTHCARE COVERAGE, ACCESS TO NEW SCIENCE'S NETWORK OF SCIENTISTS, AND CUSTOMIZED SUPPORT. THE GOAL WAS TO GIVE FELLOWS MAXIMAL LEVERAGE TO ADVANCE HIGH-POTENTIAL, PRE-PARADIGMATIC RESEARCH.SUMMER FELLOWSHIPS: NEW SCIENCE PROVIDED A FULLY-FUNDED SUMMER RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS TO PURSUE PROOF-OF-CONCEPT RESEARCH PROJECTS BASED ON EARLY-STAGE IDEAS THAT WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO FUND THROUGH TRADITIONAL GRANTS. IN 2022, THERE WERE 6 FELLOWS WHO WORKED ON PROJECTS RANGING FROM RECREATING FUNCTIONAL CHLOROPLASTS TO DEVELOPING THERAPEUTICS FOR SARS VIRUSES. THE GOAL WAS TO GIVE FELLOWS INDEPENDENCE TO EXPAND THEIR RESEARCH AMBITIONS AND LEARN ABOUT ALTERNATIVE RESEARCH STRUCTURES.
PUBLISHED METASCIENCE RESEARCHA. IN 2022, NEW SCIENCE PUBLISHED A METASCIENCE RESEARCH REPORT, "NEW SCIENCE'S REPORT ON THE NIH" WRITTEN BY MATT FAHERTY TO UNDERSTAND THEIR OPERATIONS, INCENTIVES, AND IMPACT ON SCIENTIFIC PROGRESS. THE EXTENSIVE REPORT EXAMINED ISSUES WITH THE NIH EXTRAMURAL GRANT PROCESS, STUDY SELECTIONS, FUNDING ALLOCATION, POLITICAL INFLUENCES, AND PROPOSED REFORMS. THE GOAL WAS TO ACCELERATE SCIENTIFIC PROGRESS THROUGH INSTITUTIONAL ANALYSIS AND CRITIQUE. B. ELLIOT HERSHBERG WROTE AN ANALYSIS TITLED, "HOW SOFTWARE IN THE LIFE SCIENCES ACTUALLY WORKS (AND DOESN'T WORK)" THAT WAS PUBLISHED BY NEW SCIENCE IN 2022 EXAMINING HOW SOFTWARE IS DEVELOPED AND FUNDED IN THE LIFE SCIENCES. HE FOUND THAT MOST LIFE SCIENCES SOFTWARE IS DEVELOPED BY ACADEMIC LABS, SUFFERS FROM LACK OF FUNDING AND INCENTIVES FOR MAINTENANCE, AND RESULTS IN A LARGE NUMBER OF UNUSABLE TOOLS. HE PROPOSED NEW FUNDING MODELS LIKE FOCUSED RESEARCH ORGANIZATIONS AND PRIVATE ARPAS TO ENABLE TEAMS OF PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS TO BUILD HIGHER-QUALITY SYSTEMS. THE GOAL WAS TO HIGHLIGHT CHALLENGES IN THE CURRENT ECOSYSTEM AND EXPLORE ALTERNATIVE STRUCTURES TO IMPROVE BIOLOGICAL SOFTWARE.
