MUSEUM PROGRAMMING PERMANENT EXHIBITS - A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF HMMC HOLDINGS, HISTORICAL MEMORABILIA, PHOTOGRAPHS, AND DOCUMENTS, COMPRISE THE PERMANENT EXHIBITS. THIS COLLECTION IS ON DISPLAY FOR VISITORS TO SEE IN THE TWO MAIN MUSEUM BUILDINGS AND THE GROUNDS. TEMPORARY EXHIBITS - TEMPORARY EXHIBITS ARE DISPLAYS ON LOAN TO HMMC FROM INDIVIDUALS OR ORGANIZATIONS TO SHARE WITH THE COMMUNITY. THESE EXHIBITS ARE USUALLY DISPLAYED FOR 3-4 MONTHS AND ARE HIGHLY PUBLICIZED IN THE HMMC NEWSLETTER, THE LOCAL NEWSPAPERS, AND MUSEUM-PRODUCED FLYERS. THIS YEAR'S TEMPORARY EXHIBITS INCLUDE: A HISTORICAL POSTCARD COLLECTION, A COLLECTION OF MONTGOMERY COUNTY FIRST RESPONDER PATCHES, A COLLECTION OF PRESIDENTIAL PLATES, A COLLECTION OF PRESIDENTIAL CHRISTMAS CARDS, HAND-WOVEN BASKETS FROM A LOCAL AWARD-WINNING WEAVER, THE CONROE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA'S 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION, AND W.A.S.P. AND OTHER VETERAN MEMORABILIA. ORAL HISTORY INTERVIEW PROGRAM - THE ORAL HISTORY INTERVIEW PROGRAM BEGAN IN 2011 AS AN ATTEMPT TO CAPTURE AND PRESERVE THE MEMORIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF AREA RESIDENTS. EACH INTERVIEW IS CAREFULLY RECORDED AND POSTED ON THE HMMC WEBSITE AND YOUTUBE CHANNEL SO THAT THEY CAN BE VIEWED AT NO CHARGE FROM ANYWHERE. THE INTERVIEW FORMAT ALLOWS PERSONAL INSIGHTS, MEMORIES, AND DISCUSSION THAT CANNOT BE CAPTURED IN WRITTEN DOCUMENTS. THESE INTERVIEWS KEEP THE INDIVIDUALS ALIVE IN THE COMMUNITY. 7TH GRADE TEXAS HISTORY TRUNK PROGRAM - WE PARTNERED WITH THE LONE STAR CHAPTER OF THE SONS OF THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS TO PRODUCE A TEXAS HISTORY- THEMED TRUNK FOR EACH MIDDLE SCHOOL IN CONROE ISD. EACH OF THE 14 TRUNKS CONTAIN A VARIETY OF REPLICAS OF HISTORIC ARTICLES, FLAGS, AND MAPS. THESE TRUNKS ARE DESIGNED TO SUPPLEMENT INTRUCTION IN 7TH GRADE TEXAS HISTORY CLASS.
EDUCATION: SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM - OUR TWO SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS RECEIVED CONTINUING SUPPORT TO ASSIST WITH THEIR DEGREES AT TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY. THEY WERE SELECTED DURING THEIR SENIOR YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL AND HMMC HAS SUPPORTED THEM EACH YEAR. THEY ARE NOW IN THEIR THIRD YEAR OF STUDY.
EVENTS INTIMATE GATHERING SERVICES - OUR SMALL GROUP PROGRAMS ARE CONDUCIVE FOR QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION ABOUT A VARIETY OF TOPICS HAVING LOCAL INTEREST. INTIMATE GATHERS THIS YEAR WERE CENTERED ON TOPICS SUCH AS: SARAH BESS GRAY CROW DISCUSSED GROWING UP IN THE CONROE OILFIELD AND LIVING IN THE STRAKE- GRAY HOUSE, MATHEW WHITMIRE DISCUSSED GHOST STORIES IN DOWNTOWN CONROE, JOE KOLB & MARK HAYTER DISCUSSED THEIR BOOK OF CHRISTMAS STORIES, CRAIG CAMPOBELLA DISCUSSED HIS BRONZE SCULPTURES LOCATED THROUGHOUT MONTGOMERY COUNTY AND BEYOND, RITA WILTZ DISCUSSED THE HISTORY OF THE TAMINA COMMUNITY, BILL THOMPSON DISCUSSED AND PERFORMED HIS COMPOSITION OF THE MIRACLE CITY MARCH, AND ANDY PEARSON DISCUSSED THE MOORHEAD BLUEBERRY FARM. SATURDAY PIONEER ADVENTURES - A SERIES OF PROGRAMS DESIGNED FOR CHILDREN AND THEIR PARENTS OFFERED DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS. THE PROGRAMS ARE BEST ENJOYED BY CHILDREN AT LEAST 5 YEARS OF AGE. EACH PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO BE A FUN LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR FAMILIES THAT WILL LAST ABOUT ONE HOUR. MEMORABLE PROGRAMS INCLUDE TEXAS SNAKES & MORE, WHERE PARTICIPANTS WERE ABLE TO TOUCH AND HOLD A VARIETY OF SAFE AND FRIENDLY SNAKES; THE LONE STAR VOLUNTEERS BROUGHT TEXAS HISTORY ALIVE IN PERIOD ATTIRE WHERE THEY RECREATED A TYPICAL ARMY CAMP AND FIRED THEIR CANNON SEVERAL TIMES; AND DR. MATT FULLER, MASTER BEEKEEPER, DISCUSSED THE IMPORTANCE OF BEES USING HIS OBSERVATIONAL HIVE. SIGNATURE HISTORY EVENT - A SIGNATURE EVENT PROGRAM IS HELD IN A FACILITY OTHER THAN THE MUSEUM, SO THAT A MUCH LARGER NUMBER OF PEOPLE CAN ATTEND. THE EVENT THIS YEAR WAS HELD IN THE 250 SEAT OWEN THEATER IN DOWNTOWN CONROE. HARVARD PROFESSOR ANNETTE GORDON-REED, A CONROE NATIVE AND PULITZER PRIZE WINNING AUTHOR DISCUSSED HER MOST RECENT BOOK, ON JUNETEENTH, AND SHARED HER MEMORIES OF GROWING UP IN CONROE. A SELL-OUT CROWD ATTENDED THIS EVENT. FRIENDS OF THE MUSEUM GATHERINGS - THE FRIENDS OF THE MUSEUM ARE A GROUP OF DEDICATED SUPPORTERS WHO CONTRIBUTE ANNUALLY TO SUPPORT HMMC FACILITIES, EXHIBITS, AND PROGRAMS. HMMC BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND STAFF HONOR THE FRIENDS OF THE MUSEUM WITH SPECIAL EVENTS TO THANK THEM FOR THEIR CONTINUED SUPPORT.
