THE MUSEUM'S PURPOSE IS TO EDUCATE AND EXHIBIT, FOR PUBLIC BENEFIT, THE HISTORY AND HERITAGE OF GREGG COUNTY, TEXAS.

Part 3 - Line 4a

DALTON DAYS - ANNUALLY IN APRIL, THE ORGANIZATION PRESENTS A WILD WEST REENACTMENT OF THE INFAMOUS 1894 DALTON GANG BANK ROBBERY IN LONGVIEW, TEXAS. THE EVENT REENACTS THE ROBBERY AND FOCUSES ON THE BRAVERY AND HEROISM OF THE LONGVIEW CITIZENS. THIS EVENT BRINGS AN AVERAGE OF 3,500 VISITORS TO THE MUSEUM ON THE DAY OF THE EVENT.


OVER A THREE WEEK PERIOD DURING THE MONTH OF DECEMBER, THE ORGANIZATION PRESENTS CHRISTMAS EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES THAT ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES IS THE LIVING HISTORY CHRISTMAS PRESENTATION IN WHICH VOLUNTEERS ARE DRESSED IN PERIOD COSTUMES WHILE TELLING THE HISTORY OF LONGVIEW FROM A FIRST PERSON PERSPECTIVE FROM WITHIN THE MUSEUM EXHIBIT SETTINGS. THE CHRISTMAS EVENTS ATTRACT APPROXIMATELY 2,500 VISITORS TO THE MUSEUM EACH YEAR.


EACH YEAR, THE ORGANIZATION PRESENTS A TRAVELING EXHIBIT HIGHLIGHTING A UNIQUE HISTORICAL SUBJECT THAT IS OF INTEREST TO THE GREGG COUNTY, TEXAS COMMUNITY. THESE EXHIBITS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND ARE TYPICALLY ON DISPLAY FOR APPROXIMATELY TWO MONTHS. THE CURRENT YEAR TRAVELING EXHIBIT WAS PRESENTED ON THE LIFE OF R.G. LETOURNEAU, A BUSINESSMAN IN LONGVIEW, TEXAS WHO ALSO ESTABLISHED A LOCAL CHRISTIAN POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY IN THE COMMUNITY IN 1946. THE PRESENTATION OF THIS EXHIBIT COINCIDED WITH THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THAT EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION, LETOURNEAU UNIVERSITY.


THE ORGANIZATION PRESENTS NUMEROUS MUSEUM EXHIBITS, SOME TEMPORARY AND SOME PERMANENT, ALONG WITH MANY SPECIAL EVENTS AND PUBLIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS, ALL OF WHICH ARE AVAILABLE TO THE CITIZENS AND STUDENTS IN THE EAST TEXAS AREA.
