AS ECOSYSTEM HEALTH IS IMPACTED BY A VARIETY OF FACTORS AND AS COMMUNITIES EXPAND INTO FIRE-PRONE AREAS, WILDFIRES ARE AN INCREASING THREAT TO RESOURCES AND PEOPLE. PROACTIVE PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT IS NECESSARY TO MITIGATE WILDFIRE IMPACTS. HAWAII WILDFIRE MANAGEMENT ORGANIZATION DISSEMINATES CRITICAL INFORMATION, AND IMPLEMENTS FUELS MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES AND RESEARCH THAT PROTECTS IRREPLACEABLE NATURAL RESOURCES AND COMMUNITIES.

1) MITIGATION: HAZARDOUS FUELS CONVERSION AND RESTORATION BY ESTABLISHING LIVING FUEL BREAKS THROUGH PLANTING, MAINTENANCE, AND IRRIGATION AND INSTALLING FENCING TO ALLOW FOR LANDSCAPE MITIGATION OF HAZARDOUS FUELS THROUGH GRAZING. INSTALLING DIP TANKS FOR IRRIGATION FOR GRAZING, FUELS CONVERSION AND FIRE SUPPRESSION.2) OUTREACH AND EDUCATION TO COMMUNITIES THAT MAY BE AFFECTED BY WILDFIRE. PREPARE AND UPDATE RESOURCE AND WILDFIRE MAPS.3) RESEARCH: ON FUELS AND GRAZING FOR MITIGATION.
