THE SOURHEASTERN HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY (SHS) IS A NON-PROFIT MEMBERSHIP ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO PROMOTING THE KNOWLEDGE, ART, AND ENJOYMENT OF HORTICULTURE THROUGHOUT THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES.

SHS COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAMS CREATE COMMUNITY LEARNING GARDENS AND EDIBLE SCHOOL YARDS URBAN FARMS FOR CHILDREN,YOUNG ADULTS,ADULTS AND SENIORS IN COMMUNITIES THROUGHOUT THE METRO ATLANTA AREA. SHS TEACHES SCHOOL KIDS ABOUT NUTRITION THE FUN WAY,BY HAVING THEM GROW AND TASTE THEIR OWN VEGETABLES. STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT HEALTHY CHOICES IN THE CLASSROOM AND THEN HELP TO CREATE THOSE OPTIONS IN THE COMMUNITY,MAKING THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE FOOD THEY EAT.
SHS WORKSHOPS AND LECTURES PRESENT A SERIES OF EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES THAT SPAN THE SPECTRUM OF HORTICULTURE INFORMATION AND APPEAL TO INDIVIDUALS OF ALL AGES. THE PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS REGIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL HORTICULTURE PROFESSIONALS,OFFERS PRIVATE GARDEN TOURS, PROVIDES FREE INTERACTIVE CHILDREN'S WORKSHOPS AND ACTIVITIES IN COLLABORATION WITH LOCAL FARMERS AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION ORGANIZATIONS,AND HOSTS ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCES,ROUNDTABLES AND EVENTS. SHS CREATES PERMANENT LEARNING GARDENS AND URBAN FARMS (LGUF) IN NEIGHBORHOODS THROUGHOUT METRO ATLANTA. SHS PROVIDES 2 FULL-TIME EDUCATIONAL STAFF MEMBERS TO LEAD ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS AND WORKSHOPS AT THE LGUF AS WELL AS IN LOCAL SCHOOLS AND IN THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE. WE ALSO ENGAGE THOUSANDS OF VOLUNTEERS ANNUALLY AT THESE LOCATIONS.
