IN 2021, THE USD DISCOVERY DISTRICT RESUMED PLANNING FOR BUILDING ONE. WITHIN THE YEAR THERE WAS A TRANSITION IN LEADERSHIP AS JAMES ABBOTT, RETIRED USD PRESIDENT, ACCEPTED THE POSITION AS INTERIM PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE USD DISCOVERY DISTRICT PRO BONO. AS PART OF A STRATEGY TO SECURE RESOURCES FOR THE FIRST BUILDING, PRESIDENT ABBOTT LEAD A TEAM OF STAKEHOLDERS IN ASSEMBLING A FORMAL REQUEST TO THE SOUTH DAKOTA LEGISLATURE FOR FUNDING TO BE PRESENTED AT THE 2022 LEGISLATIVE SESSION. AS PART OF THE PROPOSAL, TO ADDRESS THE NEED TO INITIATE THE FIRST PROJECT, THE USD DISCOVERY DISTRICT WILL OWN AND OPERATE THE INITIAL BUILDING. ADDITIONALLY, THE USD DISCOVERY DISTRICT CONTINUED CONVERSATIONS WITH POTENTIAL TENANT PROSPECTS AND OUTLINED A MARKETING STRATEGY TO IDENTIFY FUTURE TENANTS AND DEVELOPERS.
