EMEL PURSUED ITS CORE MISSION IN PROJECTS THAT USED SCIENTIFIC IMAGING TECHNOLOGIES TO RECOVER ILLEGIBLE TEXTS IN ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL MANUSCRIPTS AND TO DIGITALLY PHOTOGRAPH AN ENDANGERED MANUSCRIPT LIBRARY FOR PRESERVATION AND ACCESS. EMEL CONTINUED ITS WORK TO DIGITALLY PHOTOGRAPH THE ARABIC AND SYRIAC MANUSCRIPTS OF ST. CATHERINES MONASTERY OF THE SINAI, EGYPT. THE MONASTERY HOLDS THE WORLDS OLDEST CONTINUALLY OPERATING LIBRARY, AND IS ENDANGERED DUE TO THE PRESENCE OF ISIS ON THE SINAI PENINSULA. ALTHOUGH THE PANDEMIC LIMITED EMEL'S ABILITY TO WORK ONSITE IN EGYPT, EMEL WAS ABLE TO UNDERTAKE TWO THREE-WEEK DIGITIZATION SESSION AT THE MONASTERY. EMEL CONTINUED ITS COLLABORATION WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA LOS ANGELES (UCLA) TO PUBLISH THE RESULTING IMAGES ONLINE FOR FREE AND GLOBAL ACCESS.WITH INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL LIMITED BY THE PANDEMIC, EMEL LEADERS WORKED IN 2021 TO DEVELOP INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS FOR IMPLEMENTATION IN 2022 (OR AS SOON AS TRAVEL IS AGAIN ADVISABLE). THESE PROJECTS INCLUDE OPPORTUNITIES TO USE SPECTRAL IMAGING TO RECOVER ERASED OR ILLEGIBLE TEXT ON MANUSCRIPTS IN LIBRARIES IN NORTHERN ITALY AND GREECE.EMEL PERSONNEL PARTICIPATED IN FOUR CONFERENCES, BOTH ONLINE AND IN PERSON, TO COMMUNICATE EMEL'S WORK TO A GROWING AUDIENCE OF SCHOLARS AND INTERESTED MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC.
