Part 3 - Line 1

THE ATHENS CONSERVANCY EXISTS TO PRESERVE OPEN SPACE LANDS IN AND NEAR ATHENS COUNTY OHIO. WE DO THIS THROUGH ACQUISITION OF LAND OR ACQUISITION OF CONSERVATION EASEMENTS ON LAND.

Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

THIS MONEY IS USED FOR PAYMENT TO INDIVIDUALS HIRED TO REMOVE NON-NATIVE INVASIVE PLANTS (NNIS)FROM OUR PRESERVES. THESE PLANTS INCLUDE JAPANESE STILTGRASS, GARLIC MUSTARD, MULTIFLORA ROSE, PRIVET, BURNING BUSH AND MANY MORE; THEY MUST BE REMOVED REGULARLY TO CURB THE SPREAD OF INVASIVES THAT CAN DESTROY NATIVE WILDLIFE HABITAT. WE WORK ON EACH OF OUR 12 PRESERVES ON A ROTATING BASIS BECAUSE THE INVASIVE PLANTS RETURN AND MUST BE CONTROLLED.

THIS MONEY GOES TO TRAIL BUILDING. THIS YEAR WE HIRED ANOTHER NON-PROFIT TO DESIGN THE TRAILS. PAID EMPLOYEES AND VOLUNTEERS DID MOST OF THE ACTUAL LABOR. TRAIL-BUILDING IS A TIME-CONSUMING MAINTENANCE ISSUE, WHICH NEEDS TO BE UNDERTAKEN YEARLY ON EACH TRAIL TO ENSURE THEY ARE CLEARED OF GROWTH AND BRUSH, AND REMAIN ACCESSIBLE AND VISIBLE TO HIKERS AND EXPORERS.

THIS CATEGORY IS MULTI-FACETED. IT INCLUDES THE CLOSING COSTS FOR NEW PROPERTIES PURCHASED, PROPERTY TAXES PAID, LIABILITY INSURANCE TO COVER ALL OUR PRESERVES AND INTEREST ON A MORTGAGE ON ONE PRESERVE.
