DOCUMENTING THE NOW IS ONE OF OUR CORE PROGRAMS. FUNDED PRIMARILY BY THE MELLON FOUNDATION AND NOW IN ITS FOURTH YEAR, DOCNOW DEVELOPS TOOLS AND BUILDS COMMUNITY PRACTICES THAT SUPPORT THE ETHICAL COLLECTION, USE, AND PRESERVATION OF SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT. THIS PROJECT IS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA, PRINCETON UNIVERSITY, AND OTHERS.
HISTORYPIN IS A FREE-TO-USE DIGITAL PLATFORM AND ENGAGEMENT METHODOLOGY NOW SERVING THE PUBLIC FOR OVER A DECADE. DESIGNED TO SHARE STORIES AROUND LOCAL HISTORY IN ORDER TO STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY, THE PLATFORM HAS BEEN UTILIZED BY OVER 4,000 CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS AROUND THE WORLD. WITH SUPPORT FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES, MAJOR WORK IS CURRENTLY UNDERWAY TO REDESIGN THE USER INTERFACE AND RELAUNCH WITH A NEW TECHNICAL BACKEND IN 2022.
SHIFT COLLECTIVE IS PROVIDING CONSULTING SERVICES TO DESIGN, IMPLEMENT, AND SUPPORT COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, COMMUNICATIONS AND OUTREACH, AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES FOR THE NATIONAL FINDING AID NETWORK (NAFAN). FUNDED BY THE INSTITUTE FOR MUSEUM AND LIBRARY SERVICES AND LED BY THE CALIFORNIA DIGITAL LIBRARY, WE HAVE CENTERED OUR RESEARCH AND SUPPORT ON THE NEEDS OF COMMUNITY-BASED CULTURAL MEMORY PROJECTS TO INFORM NAFAN'S DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A NATIONAL NETWORK OF ARCHIVAL DESCRIPTORS.
LEADING DESIGN WORKSHOPS WITH JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES AND THE INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED BLACK POETRY CENTER, FURIOUS FLOWER, TO DEVELOP AND DISSEMINATE A NEW MODEL FOR INTEGRATED LIBRARY AND EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES SUPPORT OF A LIVING, ACADEMIC CENTER FOR THE ARTS WITH DIGITAL ARCHIVES, RESEARCH AND PERFORMANCE COMPONENTS. WE'RE PROUD TO BE A PARTNER IN ARCHIVING THE BLACK WEB, A NATIONAL FORUM FUNDED BY THE INSTITUTE FOR MUSEUM AND LIBRARY SERVICES (IMLS). THE APRIL 29-30 EVENT WILL FOCUS ON STRATEGIES FOR COLLECTING AND PRESERVING BLACK HISTORY AND CULTURE ONLINE AS WELL AS DEVELOPING A COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE FOR BLACK CULTURAL MEMORY ORGANIZATIONS AND PRACTITIONERS INTERESTED IN WEB ARCHIVING. THANKS TO THE SUPPORT OF AN NEH CARES GRANT AND THE NEW MEXICO HUMANITIES COUNCIL, WE'RE ABLE TO CONTINUE TO PROVIDE STRATEGIC AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT FOR THE MANITOS COMMUNITY MEMORY PROJECT THIS YEAR. ALLIANCE FOR CULTURAL EQUITY. ASH CULTURAL ARTS CENTER IS LEADING A COLLABORATION OF THE NEW ORLEANS DATA CENTER, SHIFT COLLECTIVE, HELICON COLLABORATIVE, AND SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY AT NEW ORLEANS IN CONDUCTING A STUDY WITH A COHORT OF LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS TO REPORT ON THE ROLE SMALL MUSEUMS AND ARCHIVES FOCUSED ON PRESERVING THE HISTORIES AND CULTURE OF MARGINALIZED PEOPLE PLAY IN THE WELFARE OF THEIR COMMUNITIES, THE VALUE THEY BRING TO THEIR LOCAL CULTURAL ECONOMY, AND POTENTIAL MODELS FOR THEIR FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY. REIMAGINE DESCRIPTIVE WORKFLOWS. WE WORKED WITH OCLC TO HOST AN INTERNATIONAL CONVENING TO EXPLORE HOW TO REMOVE BARRIERS TO INCREASE THE CREATION AND SCALING OF REPRESENTATIVE AND ANTI-RACIST METADATA DESCRIPTION IN LIBRARY AND ARCHIVE SYSTEMS.
