THE TOBIN PROJECT IS A CATALYST FOR NEW ACADEMIC THINKING ON THE MOST PRESSING NATIONAL CHALLENGES OF THE 21ST CENTURY - PROMOTING RICHER PUBLIC DISCOURSE, STRONGER PUBLIC GOVERNANCE, AND BETTER PUBLIC POLICY THROUGH GREATER UNDERSTANDING.

DEMOCRACY AND MARKETS: PROMOTING NEW RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF DEMOCRACY AND MARKETS, INVOLVING THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES:A) STIMULATING RESEARCH ON THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN DEMOCRACY, INCLUDING ORGANIZING MEETINGS OF SCHOLARS ON CRITICAL INSTITUTIONS OF DEMOCRACY. B) COMPILING AN EDITED VOLUME EXPLORING HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY CASES IN WHICH DEMOCRACIES COLLAPSE. C) COMPLETING AN EDITED VOLUME EXPLORING THE ROLE OF THE ANTIMONOPOLY TRADITION IN AMERICAN DEMOCRACY.D) ORGANIZING A TEAM OF SCHOLARS WORKING TO EXPLORE THE EMERGENCE AND DEVELOPMENT OF DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA ACROSS THE FIRST CENTURY OF THE UNITED STATES.E) PLANNING FOR A WORKSHOP AND FELLOWSHIPS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS TO GUIDE AND SUPPORT THEIR INDEPENDENT RESEARCH IN THIS AREA.

B) STIMULATING RESEARCH ON HISTORICAL CASES IN WHICH DEMOCRACIES BREAK DOWN. C) EXPLORING THE POSSIBILITY OF CREATING A CASE-BASED INTRODUCTORY ECONOMICS CURRICULUM.
