THE INSTITUTE WAS INCORPORATED IN 1993 AS THE NATIONAL LABOR COMMITTEE IN SUPPORT OF WORKER AND HUMAN RIGHTS, AND IS A HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCACY ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO DIRECT RESEARCH, PROMOTION AND PUBLIC EDUCATION REGARDING THE HUMAN RIGHTS OF WORKERS IN THE GLOBAL ECONOMY. THROUGH LONGSTANDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH HUMAN, WOMENS AND LABOR RIGHTS NGOS IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD, THE INSTITUTE SUPPORTS WORKERS' EFFORTS TO LEARN AND WIN THEIR RIGHTS, WHILE DOCUMENTING WORKING CONDITIONS AND ABUSES IN PRODUCTION DESTINED FOR THE U.S. AND EUROPE AND PROVIDING VALUABLE INFORMATION FOR U.S. CITIZENS AND POLICY MAKERS.THE INSTITUTE'S DIRECT RESEARCH, REPORTS, WEB RESOURCES AND VIDEOS COMBINING CASE STUDIES WITH ECONOMIC DATA, TRADE STATISTICS, INFORMATION ON PUBLIC POLICY AND THE PRACTICES OF U.S. AND EUROPEAN UNION MULTINATIONAL CORPORATIONS SOURCING PRODUCTION IN POOR, DEVELOPING COUNTRIES HAVE BECOME AN IMPORTANT RESOURCE FOR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS AND OTHER POLICY-MAKERS, LABOR AND RELIGIOUS LEADERS AND THE PRESS.IN RECENT YEARS, US AND EUROPEAN CORPORATIONS, ESPECIALLY IN THE APPAREL AND TOY SECTORS, HAVE SOUGHT THE INSTITUTE'S HELP TO ENSURE THAT THE FACTORIES WHERE THEY CONTRACT PRODUCTION COMPLY WITH FUNDAMENTAL WORKER RIGHTS AND LOCAL LABOR LAW. THE INSTITUTE'S CAMPAIGNS OFFER AMERICANS AN OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE CONCRETE ACTION TOWARD ENDING WORKER ABUSES, CHILD LABOR AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING; SUPPORTING WORKERS IN THEIR EFFORTS TO WIN IMPROVED CONDITIONS; DEMANDING TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY MULTINATIONAL CORPORATIONS WITH REGARD TO CONDITIONS IN THE FACTORIES WHERE THEIR PRODUCTS ARE PRODUCED AND, ULTIMATELY, BUILDING SUPPORT FOR LEGISLATION THAT WILL PROVIDE MORE SYSTEMATIC PROTECTION FOR THE RIGHTS OF WORKERS IN THE GLOBAL ECONOMY.
