SUPPORT BICYCLING AND THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE BICYCLING ENVIRONMENT IN HAWAII BY PROMOTING BICYCLING AS A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHOICE, RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY, AND MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION.

HAWAII BICYCLING LEAGUE INSTRUCTED APPROXIMATELY 1,000 ADULTS IN THE AREAS OF BIKE SAFETY AND THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF BICYCLING. REACHING 3,500 MORE ADULTS IN SAFETY PRESENTATIONS. ADDITIONALLY, 1,500 PEOPLE PARTICIPATED IN EVENTS DURING THE YEAR, INCLUDING THE HONOLULU CENTURY RIDE AND OTHER EVENTS.
BICYCLE SAFETY CLASSES WERE HELD IN HAWAII'S PUBLIC SCHOOLS ON OAHU AND SERVED 7,174 FOURTH GRADE STUDENTS. EDUCATED THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII'S 3-FEET SAFE PASSING LAW TO HELP MINIMIZE DANGEROUS CAR/BICYCLE SIDE-SWIPES. SURVEYED POLITICAL CANDIDATES AND THEN SHARED INFORMATION WITH VOTERS ON EACH CANDIDATE'S POSITION ON ISSUES IMPORTANT TO BICYCLISTS.
ENCOURAGED GOVERNMENT ENTITIES TO MAKE BIKE INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS TO CITY STREETS INCLUDING ALA KEA STREET, NORTH KING STREET, AND ALA WAI BOULEVARD; AND MAKE STATE HIGHWAYS, INCLUDING KALANIANAOLE HIGHWAY, SAFER FOR VULNERABLE ROAD USERS. ACTIVELY ADVOCATED FOR NEW INFRASTRUCTURE FOR BICYCLISTS AND PEDESTRIANS INCLUDING THE ALA WAI BRIDGE, THE ALA MOANA ELEVATED BIKE/WALKWAY, AND LEEWARD MULTIUSE PATH. ORGANIZED THE BICYCLING AND BROADER COMMUNITY TO SUPPORT LEGISLATION TO ESTABLISH THE SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL PROGRAM AND PROVIDE FUNDING TO IMPLEMENT INFRASTRUCTURE AND PROGRAMS TO IMPROVE SAFETY FOR VULNERABLE USERS.
