THE MISSION OF LOS ANGELES AUDUBON SOCIETY IS TO PROMOTE THE STUDY AND PROTECTION OF BIRDS, OTHER WILDLIFE, AND THEIR HABITATS THROUGHOUT THE DIVERSE LANDSCAPES OF THE LOS ANGELES AREA, AND TO STIMULATE POPULAR INTEREST IN AN ACCESS TO NATURE FOR ALL LOS ANGELES COMMUNITIES.

SHOREBIRD HABITAT RESTORATION EVENTS HUNDREDS OF VOLUNTEERS AND STUDENTS HELP TO CONSERVE SHOREBIRD HABITAT ON BEACHES IN LA COUNTY. THIS WORK IS FOCUSED ON NESTING AND ROOSTING SITES OF ENDANGERED CALIFORNIA LEAST TERN AND THE THREATENED WESTERN SNOWY PLOVER. SNOWY PLOVER COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER MONITORING PROGRAM SPECIALLY TRAINED COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS AND LAAS BIOLOGISTS MONITOR AND DOCUMENT SPECIALLY TRAINED COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS AND LAAS BIOLOGISTS MONITOR AND DOCUMENT THREATENED SNOWY PLOVER ACTIVITY. THESE DATA ARE PROVIDED TO THE CA DEPARTMENT OF FISH & WILDLIFE AS PART OF ONGOING RESEARCH OF THIS SPECIES.
SCHOOLYARD HABITAT BUILDING ON THEIR KNOWLEDGE FROM THE ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM, STUDENTS ASSIST LAAS COLLEGE FELLOWS, LAAS RESTORATION ECOLOGISTS AND COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS TO IMPLEMENT SCHOOLYARD HABITATS AT URBAN CORE SCHOOLS NEAR DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES. THIS PROGRAM SHOWCASES LAAS' 'SCHOOL-SHED' CONCEPT OF LEARNING WITHIN THE BALLONA CREEK WATERSHED, CONNECTING STUDENTS FROM DIFFERENT COMMUNITIES IN POSITIVE INTERACTIONS. KENNETH HAHN STATE RECREATION AREA LED BY LAAS COLLEGE INTERNS AND COMMUNITY DOCENTS, THIS PROGRAM INTRODUCES THOUSANDS OF ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS TO EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING AND SCIENCE-BASED ACTIVITIES. BALLONA WETLANDS OUTDOOR EDUCATION PROGRAM A WEEKLY SCHOOL FIELD TRIP PROGRAM BRINGS THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS AND TEACHERS EACH YEAR TO EXPERIENCE ONE OF THE LAST REMAINING COASTAL WETLANDS IN LOS ANGELES. FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4D - OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES DESCRIPTION BALLONA WETLANDS DISCOVERY WALK THE FIRST SATURDAY OF EVERY MONTH, LA AUDOBON INVITES THE PUBLIC TO TOUR THE WETLANDS. PEOPLE OF ALL AGES GET A CHANCE TO VIEW LIFE IN THE WETLANDS USING MICROSCOPES, BINOCULARS AND SPOTTING SCOPES, AND DOCENTS LEAD THE WAY ON AN EXCITING HIKE THROUGH NATURAL DUNE HABITAT TO THE BALLONA CHANNEL. BEACH ECOLOGY EXPLORATION SCHOOL PROGRAM LAAS HOSTS 8 BEACH ECOLOGY FIELD TRIPS FOR UNDER-SERVED SCHOOLS EACH YEAR. THE PROGRAM EXPLORES ECOLOGY AND STEWARDSHIP ALONG A COASTLINE VISITED BY MILLIONS OF PEOPLE EACH YEAR. DROPS (DROUGHT RESPONSE OUTREACH PROGRAM AT SCHOOLS) FIVE LAUSD SCHOOLS WILL SOON BE SEEING INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS ON THEIR CAMPUSES THAT ARE DESIGNED TO RETAIN STORM RUN-OFF, RE-CHARGE GROUND WATER AND ADD/IMPROVE GREEN SPACES WITH DROUGHT TOLERANT AND/OR NATIVE PLANTS. LOS ANGELES AUDUBON IS A PART OF THIS GRANT, PROVIDING EDUCATION TO TEACHERS AND STUDENTS ABOUT WATERSHED AND THE HISTORIC NATURAL HYDROLOGY OF LOS ANGELES, AMONG OTHER THINGS.
BALDWIN HILLS SCENIC OVERLOOK LAAS' ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM OFFERS AFTER-SCHOOL INTERNSHIP TEAMING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH BIOLOGISTS AND RESTORATION ECOLOGISTS TO ACTIVELY ENAGAGE IN AND IMPROVE THEIR COMMUNITIES.
