TAKING THE REINS' MISSION IS ADVANCING GIRL POWER THROUGH HORSEPOWER. TAKING THE REINS INSPIRES AT-RISK GIRLS TO ACT WITH COURAGE AND CONFIDENCE BY INTERACTING WITH HORSES, FARM ANIMALS, AND NATURE.

COVID-19 AND 2020 PROGRAMMING: DESPITE THE COVID PANDEMIC, TTR CONTINUED TO PROVIDE ITS CORE PROGRAMS SAFELY, FOLLOWING CDC AND L.A. COUNTY HEALTH PROTOCOLS. PIVOTING TO NEW PROGRAM DELIVERY METHODS (E.G., ZOOM, FACEBOOK, AND IN-PERSON BY APPOINTMENT), TTR SERVED 182 STUDENTS IN CORE PROGRAMS. PRE-COVID (2019), TTR SERVED 410 TEENS.EQUESTRIAN/EQUINE PROGRAM. STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN WEEKDAY, AND WEEKEND RIDING LESSONS, ALONG WITH LEARNING ABOUT HORSE CARE RESPONSIBILITIES. TEENS PARTICIPATED IN THE EQUINE SCIENCE HIPPOLOGY COMPETITION HELD AT THE LA EQUESTRIAN CENTER, AND IN THE FIRST-EVER VIRTUAL COMMUNITY HORSESHOW, WHERE THEY COMPETED AGAINST BOYS AND GIRLS FROM ACROSS THE NATION.


URBAN FARM SEED-TO-SKILLET GARDEN PROGRAMGIRLS LEARNED ABOUT GARDENING, STEWARDSHIP OF THE LAND, HEALTHY COOKING IN TTRS KITCHEN, AND ENGAGED IN STEAM-BASED PROJECTS. GIVEN COVID, URBAN FARM ALSO PROVIDED NEW PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES INCLUDING FOOD BOXES FOR STUDENTS/FAMILIES EXPERIENCING DIRE FOOD SHORTAGES, BOOK CLUB, ART PROJECTS, COOKING WITH FRIENDS/DINNER HOUR, AND ONSITE ACTIVITIES INCLUDING HIKING, OPPORTUNITIES FOR GIRLS TO COMPLETE THEIR HIGH SCHOOL REQUIREMENT OF COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS.


YOUTH EDUCATIONAL SERVICES PROGRAM (YES)QUALIFIED TTR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN WITH TTR PROGRAMS FOR A MINIMUM OF TWO CONSECUTIVE YEARS PARTICIPATE IN COLLEGE-PREP ACTIVITIES, COLLEGE TOURS, AND LIFE-SKILLS WORKSHOPS AND HAVE ACCESS TO SCHOLARSHIPS AND COLLEGE TUITIONPROVIDED 12, 2-HOUR COLLEGE-PREP AND LIFE SKILLS WORKSHOPS TO QUALIFIED TTR STUDENTS.
