JUAN GRADUATED FROM PASADENA CITY COLLEGE WITH AN ASSOCIATE DEGREE IN ARTS AND NATURAL SCIENCE WITH A 3.8 GPA AND ADMINISTRATION HONORS:I AM CURRENTLY VOLUNTEERING AT ADVENTIST HEALTH WHITE MEMORIAL. I STARTED OFF VOLUNTEERING AT THE SAME DAY SURGERY DEPARTMENT. MY EXPERIENCE VOLUNTEERING HERE HAS BEEN AWESOME. ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS I REALLY ENJOY WORKING AT AHWM IS BECAUSE OF ITS CORE VALUES, WHICH ARE ALIGNED WITH MY PERSONAL VALUES. EVEN THOUGH I AM NOT A SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST, I AM A FOLLOWER OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH, BEING RAISED CATHOLIC BY MY PARENTS. AND WHETHER SOMEONE IS OF A DIFFERENT RELIGION, I DO NOT DISCRIMINATE BECAUSE WE ARE ALL EQUAL. IT IS THESE SAME VALUES: INTEGRITY, COMPASSION, RESPECT AND EXCELLENCE THAT I UPHOLD IN DAILY LIFE. THIS IS WHY VOLUNTEERING HERE AT AHWM HAS BEEN A PLEASURE.LIVING LIFE WITH THESE VALUES IS WHAT MOTIVATES ME TO HELPING AND SERVING OTHERS. THAT IS WHAT I FEEL THIS LIFE IS ABOUT: TO HELP AND SERVE OTHERS. VOLUNTEERING MAY NOT BE A BIG HELP, OR HELPING SAVE LIVES DIRECTLY, BUT IT FEELS GOOD TO BE PART OF THE BIG PICTURE IN HELPING SAVING LIVES, NO MATTER HOW SMALL A TASK IS, OR EVEN IF MY WORK IS NOT RECOGNIZED. MY PASSION IS TO HELP OTHERS IN ANY WAY I CAN.THIS IS WHY I CHOSE TO STUDY RADIOLOGY. I FEEL THIS CAREER IS BEST SUITED FOR ME, BECAUSE IT HELPS SAVE LIVES. IT REALLY IS AMAZING HOW MUCH PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE IN THE MEDICAL WORLD. WE CAN RECORD IMAGES OF THE HUMAN BODY TO PINPOINT WHERE A BROKEN BONE IS LOCATED TO TREAT THAT AFFECTED AREA SPECIFICALLY. WE CAN SEE HOW ORGANS FUNCTION. WE CAN STOP THE SPREAD OF CANCER BY EARLY DETECTION WITH X-RAY IMAGING.IT IS A PERFECT DOORWAY INTO THE MEDICAL FIELD FOR ME. IT IS ALSO A PERFECT DOORWAY FOR ME TO GET OUT POVERTY. I AM A 1ST GENERATION MEXICAN-AMERICAN. BOTH OF MY PARENTS CAME TO THE U.S FROM MEXICO. THEY CAME WITH VIRTUALLY NOTHING BUT STILL HAVE PROVIDED STABILITY FOR MY FAMILY. WE ARE NOT RICH, WE LIVE IN A HOUSING PROJECTS FOR LOW INCOME FAMILIES. LIVING IN THE PROJECTS IS NOT THE IDEAL PLACE TO LIVE. THERE IS A LOT OF CRIME AND DRUGS HERE. THIS NEIGHBORHOOD IS ACTUALLY REFERRED TO AS A "FOOD DESERT" BECAUSE THERE IS NO PLACE TO BUY HEALTHY FOOD HERE. THERE IS ONLY ONE LIQUOR STORE HERE TO BUY FOOD. RESIDENTS HAVE TO TRAVEL A FEW MILES TO GET HEALTHY, NON-PROCESSED FOOD BECAUSE THERE ARE NO MARKETS AROUND US.I AM GRATEFUL FOR ALL THAT MY PARENTS HAVE DONE FOR ME. IT IS BECAUSE OF THEM THAT I AM MOTIVATED IN STARTING A CAREER IN THE MEDICAL FIELD. THEY HAVE ALWAYS SUPPORTED ME. THERE IS NO EXCUSE TO NOT SUCCEED. THANKS TO THEM, I AM THE 1ST AND ONLY PERSON IN MY FAMILY THAT HAS GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE. I AM EAGER TO CONTINUE ADVANCING IN MY EDUCATIONAL LIFE, EVENTUALLY BECOMING A RADIOLOGIST. I LOVE HELPING PEOPLE, AND I REALLY WANT TO HELP THOSE THAT HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THERE FOR ME AS WELL. I WANT TO GIVE MY PARENTS THE BEST, JUST LIKE THEY GAVE ME THE BEST TO SUCCEED.WEBSITES FOR OUR COMMUNITY BENEFIT INFORMATION: HTTPS://WWW.ADVENTISTHEALTH.ORG/ABOUT-US/COMMUNITY-BENEFIT/
