OUR VISION IS A CO-EXISTENT FUTURE WHERE HUMANS NO LONGER EXPLOIT WILD ANIMALS. WE WORK TO ENSURE THAT ALL WILD ANIMALS, WHETHER LIVING IN CAPTIVITY OR IN THE WILD, ARE TREATED WITH COMPASSION AND RESPECT AND ARE ABLE TO LIVE THEIR LIVES ACCORDING TO THEIR NEEDS.

BORN FREE USA RAISED AWARENESS AND EDUCATED THE PUBLIC ON ISSUES FACING WILDLIFE INCLUDING: THE DANGERS AND CRUELTY OF KEEPING WILD ANIMALS AS PETS; USE OF ANIMAL IN ENTERTAINMENT VENUES SUCH AS ZOOS AND THEME PARKS; THE TRADE IN WILDLIFE AND THEIR PARTS; AND THE TRAPPING AND FUR INDUSTRY. IT ALSO ADVOCATED FOR FEDERAL LEGISLATION TO BAN TRAPPING IN THE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE SYSTEM, PROHIBIT PRIVATE POSSESSION AND PUBLIC CONTACT WITH BIG CATS AND PRIMATES AS WELL AS A NUMBER OF OTHER ANIMAL PROTECTION BILLS. THE ORGANIZATION PUBLISHED A REPORT (PUBLIC DANGER, PRIVATE PAIN: THE CASE AGAINST THE U.S. PRIMATE PET TRADE) THAT EXPLORES THE IMPACT OF PRIMATE PET OWNERSHIP AND A REPORT (CRUSHING CRUELTY: ANIMAL TRAPPING IN THE UNITED STATES) THAT PRESENTED THE LACK OF OVERSIGHT AND REGULATION OF TRAPPING AT THE STATE LEVEL. IT ALSO DEFENDED NORTH AMERICAN WILDLIFE THROUGH AN EDUCATIONAL CAMPAIGN FOCUSED ON HOW THESE ANIMALS FORM A VITAL PART OF THEIR ECOSYSTEMS. THE BORN FREE USA PRIMATE SANCTUARY CARED FOR ITS MORE THAN 300 MONKEY RESIDENTS AND RESCUED FIVE ADDITIONAL MONKEYS FORMERLY EXPLOITED IN THE PET TRADE, LABORATORIES, AND ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS. THE ORGANIZATIONS WEST AFRICA PROGRAMS CONTINUE TO SUPPORT WEST AFRICAN LAW ENFORCEMENT AUTHORITIES IN THEIR FIGHT AGAINST WILDLIFE TRAFFICKING BY HELPING TO DEVELOP A FRAMEWORK TO STRENGTHEN NATIONAL AND REGIONAL RESPONSE TO WILDLIFE CRIME AND DISMANTLING THE CRIMINAL NETWORKS THAT TRAFFIC SPECIES ORIGINATING FROM OR TRANSITING THROUGH THE REGION. IT CONDUCTED VITAL WILDLIFE LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAININGS THAT RESULTED IN THE SUCCESSFUL SEIZURES OF HUNDREDS OF TRAFFICKED ANIMALS AND THOUSANDS OF POUNDS OF WILDLIFE PARTS. BORN FREE USAS CANADA OFFICE TOOK ACTION TO SPEAK UP FOR CAPTIVE WILDLIFE, DEFEND THE ENVIRONMENT AND ENDANGERED SPECIES FROM THREATS, PROTECT WILD ANIMALS FROM CULLING AND OTHER HARMFUL FORMS OF WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT, AND PROMOTE WILDLIFE EDUCATION. IT SUCCESSFULLY BLOCKED EXPANSION OF A PRIVATE ZOO THAT FEATURES LIVE WILDLIFE HANDLING; ASSISTED IN PROTECTING WETLANDS IN QUEBEC; PROMOTED NON-LETHAL ALTERNATIVES TO CULLING OF MULE DEER AND GEESE; AND EDUCATED THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE PLIGHT OF CORMORANTS.
