THE BERKELEY PUBLIC SCHOOLS FUNDS LARGEST PROGRAM EXPENDITURE IS FOR GRANTS TO SUPPORT TEACHING AND STUDENT LEARNING IN BERKELEYS 19 PUBLIC SCHOOLS, SERVING OVER 9,500 STUDENTS. THE SCHOOLS FUND AWARDS GRANTS FOR PROJECTS THAT HELP LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD FOR OUR STUDENTS, IN THE AREAS OF DIGITAL EQUITY, POSITIVE RACIAL IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT, FOCUSED ACADEMIC SUPPORT, EQUITABLE FAMILY ENGAGEMENT, INCLUSIVE AND CULTURALLY RELEVANT INSTRUCTION AND EMOTIONAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS. THE SCHOOLS FUND ALSO ASSISTED THE DISTRICT WITH PLANNING AND PILOTING A 4-WEEK STEM SUMMER CAMP IN THE SUMMER OF 2022, FREE TO 150 STUDENTS.
THE SCHOOLS FUND PROVIDES FISCAL SPONSORSHIP SERVICES INCLUDING MANAGEMENT, ADMINISTRATIVE AND ADVISORY SERVICES FOR SPECIAL FUNDS ESTABLISHED BY INDIVIDUALS OR BUSINESSES AND HELD BY THE SCHOOLS FUND TO BE USED FOR SPECIFIC PROGRAMS. FUNDS SUPPORT LARGE PROJECTS, SUCH AS A PARTNERSHIP WITH BAYER HEALTHCARE FOR K-8 SCIENCE EDUCATION; STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS, COMMUNITY-SPONSORED SCHOOL PROJECTS AND CAPITAL CAMPAIGNS.
THE BERKELEY PUBLIC SCHOOLS FUND MANAGES BERKELEY SCHOOLS VOLUNTEERS, THE LARGEST VOLUNTEER PROGRAM IN THE BERKELEY SCHOOLS. THE PROGRAM RECRUITS, TRAINS AND PLACES SEVERAL HUNDRED COMMUNITY MEMBERS EACH YEAR IN CLASSROOMS, LIBRARIES, GARDENS, PLAYGROUNDS AND AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS TO SUPPORT TEACHERS, STAFF AND STUDENTS. VOLUNTEERS ALSO SUPPORT STUDENTS AND FAMILIES WITH GROCERY DELIVERIES AND OTHER OCCASIONAL COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES. THE SCHOOLS FUND IS RESPONSIBLE FOR FINGERPRINTING VOLUNTEERS.
