Part 3
THE CHERRY VALLEY SCHOOL BECAME A CHARTER SCHOOL IN THE LATE 1990'S; AND ALTHOUGH STILL A PART OF PETALUMA CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT, DOES NOT RECEIVE THE FUNDING THAT IT DID AT ONE TIME. THE FRIENDS OF CHERRY VALLEY LIBRARY'S BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT HAS BEEN TO PAY PART OF THE LIBRARIAN'S SALARY TO ALLOW FOR FULL-TIME SERVICES, TO PURCHASE BOOKS, AND TO PROVIDE LITERARY EVENTS AND SUPPLIES.BY HAVING A FULL-TIME LIBRARIAN THE LIBRARY IS ABLE TO STAY OPEN ALL DAY WHEN SCHOOL IS IN SESSION, FROM 8 UNTIL 3:30. THIS ALLOWS A PLACE FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES TO GATHER BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL, AS WELL AS A PLACE FOR CHILDREN DURING THEIR LUNCH AND RECESS BREAKS. EACH CLASSROOM HAS A SCHEDULED WEEKLY VISIT TO THE LIBRARY. TEACHERS USE THE LIBRARY TO SUPPORT THEIR CURRICULUM AND CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES. THE LIBRARIAN TEACHES A BOOK CLUB ELECTIVE CLASS TO THE 6-8 GRADE CHILDREN. THE FCVL HAS A RELATIONSHIP WITH SONOMA STATE UNIVERSITY'S CREDENTIALED PROGRAM AND STUDENT TEACHERS ALLOWING USE OF LIBRARY TO SUPPORT THEIR EDUCATION. THE LIBRARY HOUSES APPROXIMATELY 11,000 BOOKS, AND FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS, BOOK PURCHASES HAVE BEEN MADE AVAILABLE SOLELY THROUGH THE FCVL CONTRIBUTIONS AS THERE IS NO FEDERAL OR STATE FUNDING.FCVL SERVES CHERRY VALLEY, A K-8 SCHOOL, WITH 420 STUDENTS PLUS STAFF MEMBERS AS WELL AS THE ON-SITE PRESCHOOL COMMUNITY OF 20 CHILDREN. ALL FAMILIES ARE ALSO WELCOME FULL USE OF THE LIBRARY. THE LIBRARY IS SUPPORTED BY FAMILY AND EXTENDED FAMILY, PROVIDING APPROXIMATELY 50 HOURS PER WEEK OF VOLUNTEER HOURS.
