Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

STOVES. RURAL UGANDANS ARE AMONG THE 4 BILLION PEOPLE IN THE DEVELOPIN WORLD STILL USING OPEN FIRE PITS IN HUTS FOR COOKING. EXPOSURE TO SMOKE CAUSES THOUSANDS OF DEATHS EACH YEAR AND CAUSES RESPIRATORY AND EYE DISEASES. AN OPEN FIRE CONSUMES LARGE AMOUNTS OF WOOD AND RELEASES A LOT OF CARBON DIOXIDE INTO THE ATMOSPHERE. AID AFRICA MANUFACTURES FROM LOCAL MATERIALS (BRICKS FROM LOCAL CLAY) EFFICENT COOKSTOVES THAT REDUCE EMISSIONS BY 75%.THESE STOVES ARE DISTRIBUTED FOR FREE TO RURAL VILLAGERS. THESE STOVES REDUCE RESPIRATORY ILLNESS AND CATARACTS, REDUCE CHILDHOOD BURNING ACCIDENTS, CONSUME LESS WOOD, AND PRODUCE LESS CARBON EMISSIONS.

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES, PRIMARILY HEALTH. AID AFRICA ALSO PROVIDES HEALTH EDUCATION AND COORDINATES WITH LOCAL GOVT TO BRING HEALTH FAIRS TO COMMUNIT

WATER WELLS. UGANDA IS RANKED 161 OUT OF 187 ON THE HUMAN DEVELOPMENT INDEX. 40% OF THE POPULATION DOES NOT HAVE ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER SOURCES. MOST UGANDANS OBTAIN WATER FROM RIVERS, PONDS, AND UNPROTECTED SPRINGS. OFTEN, THEY SHARE THESE WATER SOURCES WITH LIVESTOCK AND OTHER ANIMALS. THESE PEOPLE ARE VULNERABLE TO COMMUNICABLE AND NON-COMMUNICABLE WATER-BORNE DISEASES. THESE ARE A LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IN THESE COMMUNITIES. WELL DRILLING RIGS ARE IN SHORT SUPPLY, EXPENSIVE, COSTLY TO MAINTAIN, AND DIFFICULT TO TRANSPOR IN RURAL AREAS. AID AFRICA HAS DEVELOPED A SIMPLE DRILLING TOOL AND RIG. COMMUNITY MEMBERS WORK WITH US TO DRILL THEIR OWN WELLS. WE ALSO REPAIR BROKEN WELLS AND TEACH VILLAGES TO BUILD SHELTERED WELLS.

TREES. YEARS OF WAR, REFUGEE CAMPS, AND UNSUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL AND LIVING PRACTICES HAVE LEFT NORTHERN UGANDA STRIPPED OF ITS NATIVE TREES. AID AFRICA RAISES AND DISTRIBUTES THOUSANDS OF SEEDLINGS TO PROVIDE VILLAGES WITH FRUIT FOR NUTRITION AND AS AN INCOME SOURCE. AID AFRICA ALSO RAISES AND DISTRIBUTES TREES THAT CAN BE USED FOR SHADE AND WHOSE BRANCHES CAN BE USED FOR FUEL AND BUILDING MATERIALS.
