SALMON IN THE CLASSROOM (SITC) IS A PROGRAM OF COLUMBIA SPRINGS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CLARK PUBLIC UTILITIES. IT WAS CREATED IN 1991 BY THE WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE TO PROVIDE STUDENTS FOR HANDS-ON ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION. BY STUDYING SALMON, THEIR HABITATS, AND WATER QUALITY, STUDENTS DISCOVER THE INTERRELATIONSHIPS OF SPECIES WITHIN THEIR LOCAL WATERSHED. STUDENTS ULTIMATELY LEARN HOW TO CARE FOR THE HEALTH OF THEIR OWN ENVIRONMENT BY LEARNING HOW TO PROTECT SALMON HABITAT. ALL SCHOOLS, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE, THROUGHOUT CLARK COUNTY ARE ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SALMON IN THE CLASSROOM PROGRAM. IN 2021, OUR SITC EDUCATION TEAM WORKED WITH LOCAL SCHOOLS TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO THIS PROGRAM VIRTUALLY, WITH MANY TEACHERS CONTINUING TO HOST TANKS IN THEIR CLASSROOMS.

OVER THE PAST YEAR, OUR ON-SITE EDUCATION PROGRAM WORKED WITH THE TWO LARGEST LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN CLARK COUNTY TO PROVIDE VIRTUAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES. THESE OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDED ASYNCHRONOUS VIDEOS AND VIRTUAL CLASSROOM MEETINGS. EDUCATION MATERIALS WERE SHARED WITH ALL OF THE DISTRICT EDUCATORS IN ORDER TO PROVIDE EVERY STUDENT THAT WOULD NORMALLY ATTEND A COLUMBIA SPRINGS FIELD TRIP IN PERSON THE ABILITY TO ENGAGE THEIR LOCAL NATURE AREA. EDUCATORS ALSO ADAPTED OUR SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM TO BE PANDEMIC SAFE, SERVING SMALLER COHORTS OF STUDENTS IN A UNIQUE OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENT. ADDITIONALLY, EDUCATORS AT COLUMBIA SPRINGS WERE ABLE TO IMPLEMENT A DROP-IN LEARNING SESSION PROGRAM THAT SUPPORTED FAMILIES WORKING FROM HOME WITH YOUNGER CHILDREN.
