FRIENDS OF NEVADA WILDERNESS (FNW) WORKS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH VOLUNTEERS AND OTHERS TO PROTECT NEVADA'S WILDERNESS AND WILDLIFE. FNW IS DEDICATED TO PRESERVING ALL QUALIFIED NEVADA PUBLIC LANDS AS WILDERNESS, PROTECTING THESE WILDLANDS FROM ONGOING THREATS, EDUCATING THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE VALUES OF AND NEED FOR WILDERNESS, AND IMPROVING THE MANAGEMENT AND RESTORATION OF WILD LANDS.

WILDERNESS STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM: IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE AGENCIES, OUR VOLUNTEER STEWARDS CLEAN UP, MONITOR AND HEAL WILDLANDS AND IMPROVE WILDLIFE HABITAT AND RECREATIONAL TRAIL ACCESS. IN 2021 WE BEGAN RAMPING UP OUR PROJECTS AS SAFETY ALLOWED. OUR 737 VOLUNTEERS COMPLETED 45 PROJECTS GIVING BACK A TOTAL OF 353,619 OF IN-KIND VOLUNTEER SERVICE. VOLUNTEERS MONITORED 313 SPRINGS, PULLED INVASIVE WEEDS, SEEDED NATIVE PLANTS, REMOVED GRAFFITI, RESTORED ILLEGAL VEHICLE ROUTES IN WILDERNESS AND INSTALLED SIGNS. OUR TRAIL CREW MAINTAINED ABOUT 59 MILES OF WILDERNESS TRAILS AND THE SHELDON RESOURCE CREW REMOVED 2.4 TONS OF WASTE METAL FROM REFUGE WILDLANDS.


WILDERNESS LEGISLATION AND PLANNING PROGRAM: IN 2021 WE WERE AGAIN SUCCESSFUL IN KEEPING MILITARY EXPANSION OUT OF THE DESERT NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE AND STOPPING A LARGE FALLON NAVAL AIR STATION EXPANSION. WE WORKED WITH NYE COUNTY TO PROPOSE NEW WILDERNESS AND NATIONAL CONSERVATION AREAS. WE CONTINUED WORK ON THE CONSERVATION COMPONENTS OF THE WASHOE AND CLARK COUNTIES PUBLIC LANDS BILLS. WE HAVE READ, ANALYZED AND PROVIDED COMMENTS ON MANY PUBLIC LAND PROPOSALS THAT COULD AFFECT NEVADA WILDLANDS.


WILDERNESS EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAM: WE DESIGNED AND PRINTED TWO NEWSLETTERS, PRODUCED THE 2022 WILD NEVADA CALENDAR, SENT MONTHLY E- NEWSLETTERS AND NUMEROUS ALERTS AND EVENT INVITATIONS TO OUR SUPPORTERS. WE HOSTED THE MONTHLY WILD SPEAKER SERIES, THE WILD AND SCENIC FILM FESTIVAL, THE BLACK ROCK RENDEZVOUS AND NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY EVENTS AND A DARK SKY FESTIVAL. WE PARTICIPATED IN NUMEROUS TABLING EVENTS AND VOLUNTEER FAIRS WITH LOCAL COLLEGES. ADDITIONAL STORIES, VIDEOS, AND PHOTOS CAN BE VIEWED ON OUR WEBSITE, INSTAGRAM, FACEBOOK AND YOUTUBE.
