GRANT TO ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB AT COLONIAL FORGE HIGH SCHOOL TO BUILD AN EDUCATIONAL FOREST TRAIL ON SCHOOL PROPERTY. IT WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND THE ROLE TREES PLAY IN ECOSYSTEMS INCLUDING CLEAN WATER. EFFORT IS LED BY STUDENTS AND SCHOOL SCIENCE TEACHER.
SCHOLARSHIP AND GRANT TO COMPLETE A STUDY ON THE HEAT ISLAND EFFECT IN FREDERICKSBURG NEIGHBORHOODS BY UMW STUDENT. THE STUDY REPORT WAS PRESENTED TO THE CITY COUNCIL AND RESULTED IN THE CITY CHANGING SOME OF ITS ZONING RULES FOR TREE CANOPY. THE REPORT WAS PRESENTED AT A NATIONAL SCIENCE CONFERENCE GU IN CHICAGO IN 11 22.
GRANT TO UMW EARTH SCIENCES DEPT. FOR STUDENTS TO CONTINUE RESEARCH INTO SNAILS AND FISH LIVING NEAR COAL ASH PONDS TO SEE HOW COAL ASH POLLUTION IN STREAMS IS AFFECTING THE FOOD CHAIN. THE STUDY DOCUMENTS HOW COAL ASH IMPACTS CREATURES LIVING IN STREAMS POLLUTED BY COAL ASH SPILLS.
