CARDINAL NEWS FORMED IN JUNE 2021 AND QUICKLY LAUNCHED BY SEPTEMBER IN TIME FOR THE COMMONWEALTH'S ELECTION CYCLE. WITH AN EXECUTIVE EDITOR AND 2 REPORTERS ON STAFF, ALONG WITH A GROUP OF 8-10 FREELANCERS, CARDINAL BEGAN TELLING KEY STORIES ABOUT ISSUES IMPORTANT TO SOUTHWEST AND SOUTHSIDE VIRGINIA. IN POLITICS, WE COVERED THE ELECTION CYCLE (LOCAL AND GOVERNOR'S RACE), THE REDISTRICTING COMMISSION AND OTHER ISSUES SUCH AS SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION AND BROADBAND. WE TOLD STORIES ABOUT OUR ECONOMY, INCLUDING THE MEDICAL GLOVE FACTORY IN WYTHE COUNTY, HIGH-TECH LABS IN ROANOKE/NEW RIVER VALLEY, THE CENTER OF ADVANCED MANUFACTURING IN DANVILLE, A GRAPHENE LAB IN WISE COUNTY AND THE HARVEST FOUNDATION IN MARTINSVILLE PAYING FOR STUDENTS IN THEIR AREA TO ATTEND COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WE ALSO TOLD STORIES AFFECTING THE PEOPLE AND CULTURE OF THE AREA. THIS INCLUDED THE FLOOD RAVAGED AREA OF HURLEY, VIRGINIA IN BUCHANAN COUNTY, BRINGING MUCH NEEDED ATTENTION. WITH ALL THESE STORIES, OUR AUDIENCE BEGAN TO GROW, INCLUDING IN RICHMOND (STATE CAPITOL AREA) AND NORTHERN VIRGINIA (NATIONAL CAPITOL AREA). THROUGH OUR JOURNALISM WE ARE HELPING TO SHAPE, AND POSSIBLY RESHAPE, THE IMPRESSIONS OF SOUTHWEST AND SOUTHSIDE.
