PORTLAND HARBOR COMMUNITY COALITION (PHCC) ORGANIZES FRONTLINE GROUPS AND INDIVIDUALS TO HEALTHY4 WATER, LAND AND AIR IN AND AROUND THE WILLAMETTE RIVER, FEDERAL SUPERFUND AREA, POLLUTED FROM OVER A CENTURY OF HEAVY INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITY.

HOSTED THREE FILM SCREENINGS HIGHLIGHTING VOICES, VISIONS AND SOLUTIONS OF THE INDIGENOUS/NATIVE AND BLACK/AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITIES RELATED TO WATER AND LAND. SUPPORTED HUNDREDS OF YOUTH AND FAMILIES TO CONNECT TO THE RIVER THROUGH CANOEING, FISHING, AND GAINING KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE SUPERFUND SITE. ALONG WITH YAKAMA NATION, PHCC CONVINCED THE EPA TO EXPLORE HABITAT AND RECREATIONAL ACCESS TO THE PORTLAND HARBOR AFTER IT IS RESTORED, AND WILL CONTINUE TO PUSH FOR ROBUST HABITAT AND COMMUNITY ACCESS TO BE INTEGRATED INTO THE CLEANUP OF THE RIVER. IN DEVELOPMENT JUSTICE FOR BIPOC COMMUNITIES, PHCC SUPPORTED THE ORGANIZING OF THE YORK WORK GROUP THAT IS PROMOTING A FUTURE YORK URBAN VILLAGE. COLLABORATED WITH A NATIONAL NETWORK OF RESEARCHERS TO LAUNCH A CUMULATIVE IMPACTS ASSESSMENT AND COMMUNITY RESILIENCE PLAN WITH AN ENDORSEMENT FROM MULTNOMAH COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH. COORDINATED COMMUNITY LEADERS TO SECURED ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE LANGUAGE IN DEQS EQUITY STATEMENT FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF OR SENATE BILL 1567 TO MINIMIZE RISK FOR FUEL TANKS ALONG THE WILLAMETTE AND ACROSS OR IN THE EVENT OF AN EARTHQUAKE.
