WOMEN IN NEUROSCIENCE IS BUILDING A DIVERSE COMMUNITY OF WOMEN LEADERS IN NEUROSCIENCE AND NEUROLOGY THROUGH STUDENT INTERNSHIPS, MENTORSHIP, AND SCHOLARSHIPS.

WOMEN IN NEUROSCIENCE (WIN) PROVIDES SCHOLARSHIPS FOR YOUNG WOMEN TO PARTICIPATE IN 8-WEEK INTERNSHIPS WORKING WITH SCIENTISTS IN THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN DEPARTMENT OF NEUROSCIENCE AND THE DELL MEDICAL SCHOOL DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY. OUR INTERNSHIPS BUILD A PIPELINE OF HIGHLY QUALIFIED, DEDICATED FEMALE PROFESSIONALS IN THESE FIELDS AND OFFER AN ENTRY POINT TO A LIFETIME COMMUNITY OF SUPPORT. IN 2022 WE PROVIDED EIGHTEEN INTERNSHIPS WHICH BROUGHT OUR NUMBER OF TOTAL STUDENTS SERVED TO FORTY-FIVE. WE FOCUS ON BRINGING IN HISTORICALLY EXCLUDED POPULATIONS INTO OUR PROGRAM. THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF THIS YEARS INTERNS WAS AS FOLLOWS: 28% BLACK STUDENTS, 33% LATINA STUDENTS, 28% ASIAN STUDENTS AND 5.5% WHITE STUDENTS, AND 5.5% MIDDLE EASTERN STUDENTS. EIGHT OF OUR INTERNS WERE FIRST GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS. KEY ASPECTS OF WINS INTERNSHIPS INCLUDE WORKING WITH A SCIENTIST, GAINING ACCESS TO LAB EXPERIENCE, AND RECEIVING ONE-ON-ONE ADVISING AND GUIDANCE FROM FACULTY HOSTS. WE ALSO OFFER SEMINARS ON THE BASICS OF RESEARCH, DAILY SPEAKERS FROM DIFFERENT AREAS IN THE NEUROLOGICAL FIELDS, AND COACHING IN WRITING, SPEAKING, AND LEADERSHIP. AFTER THE INTERNSHIPS ARE FINISHED, WE CONTINUE TO ENGAGE WITH THE STUDENTS OFFERING ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT THROUGHOUT THEIR CAREERS.
