ADVOCATES FOR JUSTICE FOR JAPANESE LATIN AMERICAN AND JAPANESE AMERICAN SURVIVORS AND DESCENDANTS OF THE DEPT OF JUSTICE'S WWII CRYSTAL CITY FAMILY INTERNMENT CAMP THROUGH EDUCATION, PILGRIMAGE PROGRAMS & SITE PRESERVATION.

IN 2023, THE CRYSTAL CITY PILGRIMAGE COMMITTEE CONDUCTED AN EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCE AT THE LA QUINTA RIVERWALK IN SAN ANTONIO ON OCTOBER 26, 27 AND 29, ATTENDED BY SOME 100 PARTICIPANTS FROM ACROSS THE US AND JAPAN. THE HISTORY OF THE LAST WWII ERA U.S. CONCENTRATION CAMP WAS EXAMINED, WITH PRESENTATIONS BY SURVIVORS AND A DESCENDANT OF THE CRYSTAL CITY (FAMILY) INTERNMENT CAMP. ON OCTOBER 28, 2023, A PILGRIMAGE TO THE SITE OF THE CRYSTAL CITY (FAMILY) INTERNMENT CAMP WAS CONDUCTED WITH FORMER INTERNEES, DESCENDANTS, CRYSTAL CITY COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND GUESTS. A MEMORIAL PROGRAM WAS HELD AT THE FORMER INTERNMENT SITE'S SWIMMING POOL, REMEMBERING THE 33 INTERNEES WHO DIED DURING IN THE CAMP DURING THE INTERNMENT.


DURING 2023, FUNDS WERE RAISED FOR A CRYSTAL CITY MEMORIAL MONUMENT LISTING THE NAMES OF 33 INTERNEES WHO DIED DURING THE INTERNMENT. THE MONUMENT WAS DESIGNED BY KAZUMU NAGANUMA, AND SHIPPED TO CRYSTAL CITY FOR INSTALLATION AT THE INTERNMENT SITE'S SWIMMING POOL. THE MONUMENT WAS DEDICATED DURING THE OCTOBER 28, 2023, PILGRIMAGE.


ON OCTOBER 28, 2023, A ROAD TO THE FORMER INTERNMENT SITE'S SWIMMING POOL WAS PAVED AND NAMED "CALLE DE AIKO Y SACHIKO" THE CITY, HONORING THE MEMORY OF TWO 10-YEAR-OLD PERUVIAN JAPANESE GIRLS WHO TRAGICALLY DROWNED IN THE POOL IN 1944. THE DEDICATION OF THE STREET TOOK PLACE DURING THE OCTOBER 28, 2023, PILGRIMAGE. ON NOV. 7, 2023, THE HENRI AND TOMOYE TAKAHASHI CHARITABLE FOUNDATION AWARDED 33,000 TO THE CCPC FOR THE MEMORIAL MONUMENT AND 125,000 TO BE USED FOR A CRYSTAL CITY INTERNMENT MUSEUM FEASIBILITY STUDY.
