TO ENHANCE THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE PENNSYLVANIA (AND MID-ATLANTIC REGION) POULTRY, SWINE, LAMB, SHEEP, AND GOAT INDUSTRIES THROUGH FOCUSED RESEARCH, INNOVATION, DIAGNOSTICS, AND OUTREACH EDUCATION EFFORTS.

THE CENTER PROVIDES PRODUCERS BIOSECURITY EDUCATION VIA REGIONAL BIOSECURITY WORKSHOPS, EDUCATION SESSIONS, AND WEBINARS; INDIVIDUALIZED BIOSECURITY PLANS; AND BIOSECURITY IMPLEMENTATION GRANTS TO IMPLEMENT APPROVED BIOSECURITY PLANS. IN THE CURRRENT YEAR, THE CENTER OFFERED A REIMBURSEMENT PROGRAM TO POULTRY, SWINE, LAMB, SHEEP AND GOAT PROCESSORS IN AN EFFORT TO HELP OFFSET SOME COSTS RELATED TO INCREASED NEED FOR PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) RESULTING FROM COVID-19 CONCERNS. 41 DIFFERENT BUSINESSES IN 20 PENNSYLVANIA COUNTIES RECEIVED PPE REIMBURSEMENT FUNDS.


THE CENTER FUNDS RESEARCH THAT MEETS INDUSTRY NEED, AS IDENTIFIED BY PRODUCER FEEDBACK AND LEADERSHIP INSIGHT. RESEARCH PROJECTS ARE RELATED TO EITHER SMALL RUMINANTS, SWINE OR POULTRY.


ENHANCE ANIMAL AGRICULTURE INFRASTRUCTURE BY FUNDING THE PERFORMANCE OF A SWOT ANALYSIS FOR ALL OF ANIMAL AGRICULTURE THROUGHOUT PENNSYLVANIA TO ASSIST IN IDENTIFYING ECONOMIC IMPACT, ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT, REGIONAL CHALLENGES, AND AREAS OF GROWTH FOR ANIMAL HEALTH AND FOOD SAFETY. ADDITIONALLY, ANIMAL HEALTH AND DISEASE PREVENTION WILL BE SUPPORTED VIA STUDENT LOAN REIMBURSEMENTS OVER A FIVE-YEAR CONTRACT WHICH WILL BE AWARDED TO TWO NEW VETERINARIANS TO SERVE WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA, WHICH CURRENTLY LACKS VETERINARIANS AND FIELD DIAGNOSTICS.
