THE ILLINOIS PRISON PROJECT WORKS FOR A MORE SENSIBLE AND HUMANE PRISON SYSTEM IN ILLINOIS BY ADVOCATING FOR AND ON BEHALF OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WHO ARE NEEDLESSLY INCARCERATED. IT PROVIDES DIRECT REPRESENTATION TO INCARCERATED ELDERLY PEOPLE DISABLED AND INFIRM PEOPLE AND PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN REHABILITATED AFTER SUBSTANTIAL PERIODS OF INCARCERATION. IT WORKS DIRECTLY WITH PUBLIC OFFICIALS TO DEVELOP POLICIES AND MECHANISMS TO REDUCE ILLINOIS' BLOATED PRISON SYSTEM. IT WORKS ALONGSIDE CURRENTLY AND FORMERLY INCARCERATED PEOPLE TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE HIGH COST OF ILLINOIS' PRISON SYSTEM THE BROKEN SENTENCING LAWS AND POLICIES THAT HAVE LED US HERE AND THE MANY PATHS FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM.

IPP PROCESSED MORE THAN 290 INTAKES FOR LEGAL SERVICES FROM INCARCERATED PEOPLE OPENED MORE THAN 219 NEW LEGAL CASES PROVIDED "COUNSEL AND ADVICE" TO OVER 100 PEOPLE THROUGH OUR VIRTUAL TWICE-MONTHLY FREE LEGAL CLINIC AND CLOSED MORE THAN 63 LEGAL CASES. WE FREED 19 PEOPLE FROM PRISON MANY OF WHOM WERE SERVING LIFE OR VIRTUAL LIFE SENTENCES.
IPP WORKED WITH JOURNALISTS TO SHIFT NARRATIVES ABOUT THE CRIMINAL LEGAL SYSTEM AND ILLINOIS PRISONS BY HIGHLIGHTING PERSONAL STORIES OF PEOPLE. THIS WORK RESULTED IN 431 EARNED MEDIA MENTIONS WITH A POTENTIAL REACH OF 1.05B PEOPLE. BY AMPLIFYING AND CREATING A PLATFORM FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE SURVIVED THE PRISON SYSTEM TO SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES WITH LOCAL AND NATIONAL AUDIENCES IPP'S WORK MADE STRIDES IN UNWINDING PERVASIVE MYTHS ABOUT THE PEOPLE HOUSED IN ILLINOIS PRISONS THE REALITY OF PRISON LIFE AND THE DESPERATE NEED FOR PATHWAYS OUT OF PRISON. IPP'S EDUCATION STAFF AND AMBASSADORS REACHED 27,806 PEOPLE THROUGH A VARIETY OF EVENTS THAT INCLUDED ONLINE FORUMS AND GATHERINGS IN COMMUNITY SPACES SUCH AS SCHOOLS WORKPLACES AND RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS.
