STUDENT INITIATIVES:- GRANTS AWARDED TO VARIOUS INSTITUTIONS EDUCATING STUDENTS ABOUT THE NY LEGAL SYSTEM, THE ROLE OF THE COURTS AND LAWYERS, OUR DEMOCRATIC PROCESS AND RIGHTS, AND THE RULE OF LAW. - BHSEC: GRANT OF $6,500 AWARDED TO BARD COLLEGE TO FUND ONE JUDITH S. KAYE TEACHING FELLOW TO TEACH ONE SEMESTER-LONG COURSE TO 11TH & 12TH GRADERS AT BARD HIGH SCHOOL EARLY COLLEGE IN THE SPRING, 2021 SEMESTER. THIS CLASS WERE TAUGHT VIRTUALLY AND WAS A HELPFUL ADDITION FOR BHSEC DURING THIS PERIOD OF CHALLENGING VIRTUAL TEACHING, AND ALSO FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF LESSON PLANS FOCUSING ON ISSUES OF THE ROLE OF THE COURTS - OTHER PODCASTS: WE DEVELOPED SEVERAL PODCASTS WITH BHSEC AND BARD COLLEGE ADMINISTRATORS AND JUDITH KAYE FELLOWS TO RECORD THROUGH INTERVIEWS THE EDUCATION INITIATIVES THEY WERE INVOLVED IN AND SERVE AS OUTREACH MATERIAL TO EDUCATORS.


EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC ON TOPICS OF NYS LEGAL HISTORY WERE CONDUCTED BY WEBINARS FOR ONLINE PROGRAMMING. PUBLICATIONS:- THE SOCIETY PUBLISHED AND DISTRIBUTED TO ITS MEMBERS THE 2021 ANNUAL CALENDAR. THE TOPIC FOR THE 2021 CALENDAR: RACE & SLAVERY IN THE NY COURTS 1625-1860- THE SOCIETY PUBLISHED AND DISTRIBUTED OUR SCHOLARLY JOURNAL, JUDICIAL NOTICE, ISSUE 16, IN 2021. THE ISSUE FEATURED THREE TRAILBLAZING WOMEN IN NY LEGAL HISTORY AND LOOKS AT THE HISTORY OF A LAW SCHOOL THAT EDUCATED MANY PROMINENT NY LAWYERS IN THE 18TH CENTURY


ORAL HISTORY PROJECT: THE SOCIETY IS ENGAGED IN AN ONGOING PROJECT TO RECORD THE ORAL HISTORIES OF PROMINENT RETIRED JUDGES AND OTHER LEGAL LUMINARIES OF NYS TO PRESERVE THE RECORD OF THEIR EXPERIENCES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS PART OF NYS LEGAL HISTORY. IN 2021 WE CONTINUED TO DEVELOP THIS INITIATIVE BY WORKING TO ADD TO THE WEBSITE THE VIDEO RECORDINGS OF THE INTERVIEWS TO SUPPLEMENT THE TRANSCRIPTS.COURTHOUSE EXHIBIT: WE COMPLETED IN 2020 A PROJECT DEVELOPED OVER A FEW YEARS TO CREATE AN EXHIBIT OF PANELS ACCOMPANIED BY AN AUDIO RECORDING ON THE FAMOUS LEMMON SLAVE CASE WHERE THE NY COURT OF APPEALS RECOGNIZED THE RIGHTS OF SLAVES BROUGHT INTO THE STATE FROM A SLAVE STATE TO BE FREE AND NOT PROPERTY OF SLAVEOWNERS. THE EXHIBIT BEGAN TRAVELING TO COURTHOUSES ACROSS THE STATE IN 2021 AND HAS MET WITH AN ENTHUSIASTIC RESPONSE FROM VISITORS TO THE COURTHOUSES. IT IS EXPECTED TO TRAVEL TO 45 COURTHOUSES IN 2021 & 2022.ASPEN INSTITUTE: THE SOCIETY COORDINATED WITH THE ASPEN INSTITUTE TO SEND TWO NYS JUDGES TO A WEEK-LONG SEMINAR ON JUSTICE AND THE RULE OF LAW. THIS INITIATIVE WAS FULLY FUNDED BY LEON POLSKY.
