A QUICK OVERVIEW OF FRIENDS OF JERRY GARCIA AMPHITHEATER AND IT'S MAJOR PROJECT; JERRY DAY. STARTING OUT AS A GRASS ROOTS EVENT THAT ORIGINATED IN THE EXCELSIOR DISTRICT, JERRY DAY CELEBRATES THE MOST FAMOUS NATIVE SON TO THE EXCELSIOR DISTRICT, AND QUITE POSSIBLY SAN FRANCISCO - JERRY GARCIA. GROWING UP IN THE EXCELSIOR DISTRICT, JERRY GARCIA OVERCAME MANY OBSTACLES IN LIFE AND WENT ON TO CREATE A HUGE LEGACY ACROSS THE AMERICAN MUSIC LANDSCAPE, MOST NOTABLY AS A FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE GRATEFUL DEAD. RECOGNIZE FOR HIS DEVOTION TO ART AND MUSIC, GARCIA CONTINUES TO INSPIRE FUTURE GENERATIONS THROUGH HIS WORK THAT HE HAS LEFT BEHIND AND HIS CREATIVE SPIRIT. IN 2002, AND INSPIRED BY JERRY'S TALENT FOR ART AND MUSIC, EXCELSIOR RESIDENTS HOSTED THE FIRST JERRY GARCIA / EXCELSIOR CELEBRATION AT THE ITALIAN AMERICAN SOCIAL CLUB. FOLLOWING THIS EVENT WE MOVED THE CELEBRATION TO THE MCLAREN PARK AMPHITHEATER IN AUGUST OF 2003 AND CALLED THE EVENT "JERRY DAY." IN JULY OF 2005, WE SUCCESSFULLY LOBBIED THE CITY AND COUNTY OF SAN FRANCISCO TO RENAME THE AMPHITHEATER TO JERRY GARCIA AMPHITHEATER BEFORE JERRY DAY 2005. FROM THERE, IT BECAME A STANDARD TO HAVE THE EVENT ON THE FIRST SUNDAY OF AUGUST. IN 2017, THE JERRY DAY COMMITTEE FORMED A NON PROFIT AROUND JERRY GARCIA AMPHITHEATER AND CURRENTLY HAVE JERRY DAY AS THE MAIN PROJECT FOR NOW. WITH NON PROFIT SUPPORT AND ASSISTANCE FROM SAN FRANCISCO BEAUTIFUL, FRIENDS OF JERRY GARCIA AMPHITHEATER AND JERRY DAY WERE DEVELOPING AND BUILDING FROM THE ONGONG SUCCESS OF THE ANNUAL EVENT AND HAD ITS BEST EVENT YET AT THE 17TH ANNUAL CELEBRATION IN 2019. IN 2020, AS WE ALL KNOW, COVID 19 TOOK CENTER STAGE, AND WE HAD TO UNFORTUNATELY CELEBRATE THE ANNUAL EVENT 100% ONLINE AND EXPERIENCED A HUGE DROP IN DONATIONS. FORTUNATELY, WE HAD OVER 80,000 PEOPLE TUNED IN TO THE ANNUAL EVENT. STU ALLEN AND MARS HOTEL PLAYED A 3 HOUR EVENT IN A REMOTE LOCATION. THE EVENT WAS CARRIED OUT BY NUGS.TV, ONE OF THE LARGEST LIVE MUSIC STREAMING PROVIDERS. BASED ON THIS SUCCESS, WE HAD A DONOR SECURE A PERFORMANCE WITH MELVIN SEALS AND JGB FOR A SPECIAL CHRISTMAS EVENT WHICH WAS CARRIED OUT BY NUGS.TV AND SAW ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL ONLINE TURNOUT. WE LOOK FORWARD TO CARRY THIS MOMENTUM BACK INTO A FULL LIVE SITUATION AND CONTINUE TO GROW THIS ANNUAL EVENT.
