Part 3

IN 2020 THE U'ILANI FUND GAVE AWAY GRANTS FOR A TOTAL OF $138,247 TO NEEDY WOMEN WITH BREAST CANCER TO FUND COMPLEMENTARY CARE TREATMENTS THAT ENHANCE THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE AS THEY ARE GOING THROUGH CHEMO AND OTHER CANCER TREATMENTS. COMPLEMENTARY CARE SUCH AS ACUPUNCTURE AND MASSAGE IS NOT TYPICALLY COVERED BY INSURANCE AND SO IT CAN BE A HARDSHIP TO THOSE ALREADY DEALING WITH THE FINANCIAL BURDEN OF CANCER. THE NON-PROFIT WAS FOUNDED IN 2001 TO HONOR MARINA 'U'ILANI' BERMUDEZ, A 41 YEAR OLD PHYSICIAN FROM HAWAII, WHO PASSED AWAY IN JUNE, 2000 IN SANTA CRUZ, CA, AFTER BATTLING BREAST CANCER FOR 1 1/2 YEARS. DURING HER CANCER TREATMENTS, SHE FOUND THAT COMPLEMENTARY CARE LIKE ACUPUNCTURE, MASSAGE, AND CHINESE HERBS GREATLY IMPROVED HER QUALITY OF LIFE WHILE SHE WAS UNDERGOING CHEMO. THE FUND HAS RAISED AND SUBSEQUENTLY GIVEN AWAY OVER $670,000 IN GRANTS TO OVER 2,000 WOMEN WITH BREAST CANCER SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 2001. IN AUGUST OF 2020, THE BOARD DETERMINED THAT 20 YEARS OF SERVICE FULLY HONORED MARINA U'ILANI AND COVID AND OTHER CHALLENGES HINDERED THE BOARD FROM CONTINUING OPERATIONS. THE BOARD THEN SET UPON DISSOLUTION OF THE ORGANIZATION AND COMPLETED THIS DECEMBER 31, 2020.
