Describe the Organization's Mission:

Part 3 - Line 1

TO PROTECT AND DEFEND THE RURAL AND RESIDENTIAL CHARACTER, AND TO PRESERVE THE NATURAL AND AESTHETIC BEAUTY OF THE BIG SUR COAST; TO PROVIDE FOR THE HEALTH, SAFETY AND WELFARE OF THE BIG SUR COMMUNITY; TO ENCOURAGE COMMUNITY SERVICE AND OTHERWISE ACT IN THE INTERESTS OF THE RESIDENTS AND PROPERTY OWNERS OF THE COMMUNITY.

Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

BIG SUR DESTINATION STEWARDSHIP PROJECT - BIG SUR IS RANKED AS ONE OF THE TOP 35 TOURIST HOTSPOTS ON THE GLOBE. AS CHALLENGES MOUNT DUE TO AN INCREASE IN VISITORS, COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION OF BIG SUR (CABS)IS AT THE FOREFRONT IN CALLING FOR A BIG SUR DESTINATION STEWARDSHIP PROJECT (DSP) AND THE BIG SUR PLEDGE. A DSP PROCESS PROVIDES A PATHWAY FOR OUR COMMUNITY TO ASSESS AND CO-DESIGN INNOVATIVE MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS TO ADDRESS VISITATION, NATURAL RESOURCE PROTECTION, TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT, ECONOMIC IMPACTS, PROVIDE FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING SOLUTIONS AND COMMUNITY WELL-BEING. THE BIG SUR PLEDGE IS DESIGNED TO ENGAGE VISITORS IN A POSITIVE WAY TO HAVE LESS IMPACT ON BIG SUR'S FRAGILE RESOURCES.

DISASTER RECOVERY - BIG SUR HAS EXPERIENCED FIRE, FLOOD, SLIDES AND BRIDGE COLLAPSE OVER THE PAST 10 YEARS. CABS WORKS WITH DONORS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO DISTRIBUTE RECOVERY FUNDS TO GET FAMILIES BACK ON THEIR PROPERTIES AFTER A DISASTER BY PROVIDING SERVICES SUCH AS ASH REMOVAL, SEPTIC AND WATER SYSTEMS REPAIR AND SHARED ROADS REPAIR. BIG SUR EXPERIENCED THREE DISASTERS IN 2020. COVID FORCED THE CLOSURE OF BUSINESSES, A FIRE DESTROYED HOMES IN THE DOLAN RIDGE AREA, AND HIGHWAY 1 WASHED OUT AT RAT CREEK DUE TO A MUDSLIDE CAUSED BY THE DOLAN FIRE. CABS RESPONDED TO ALL THREE WORKING WITH DONORS AND BENEFICIARIES TO HELP OFFSET THE FINANCIAL IMPACT OF ALL THREE DISASTERS.

COMMUNITY PROBLEM SOLVING - WORKFORCE HOUSING, LONG-TERM INFRASTRUCTURE REPAIRS, AND THE CALIFORNIA COASTAL TRAIL WORK ARE ALL A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY PROBLEM SOLVING PROGRAM. A PROPERTY WAS IDENTIFIED FOR POTENTIAL ACQUISITION FOR WORKFORCE HOUSING AND A DONOR PROVIDED CAPITAL FOR INITIAL DUE DILLIGENCE. GREAT PROGRESS WAS MADE ON THE TRAIL ALIGNMENT WITH A PROPOSAL FROM THE COMMUNITY BEING SHARED WITH THE COUNTY AND COASTAL COMMISSION. ALSO, A LONG-TERM INFRASTRUCTURE REPAIR PROJECT IN A NEIGHBORHOOD FINALLY MOVED FORWARD WITH A NEW FUND RAISING STRATEGY.
