THE GRATEFUL CRANE ENSEMBLE PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE UNIQUE HARDSHIPS AND INSPIRING CONTRIBUTIONS OF JAPANESE AMERICANS IN OUR COUNTRY'S HISTORY AND CONTINUES THE TRADITIONS OF OUR JAPANESE ANCESTRY THROUGH EDUCATIONAL AND ENTERTAINING WORKS OF MUSIC AND THEATER TO THE NIKKEI AND BROADER COMMUNITIES.

IN APRIL 2022, THE FIRST IN-PERSON SHOW SINCE THE PANDEMIC WAS HELD IN SACRAMENTO TO HONOR LEGENDARY SINGER, ACTRESS, AND ENTERTAINER MISORA HIBARI, WHO PROVIDED JOY AND ENCOURAGEMENT TO JAPANESE AND JAPANESE AMERICANS AS THEY REBUILT THEIR LIVES AFTER WORLD WAR II. THE PROGRAM INCLUDED SOME OF HER GREATEST HITS SUCH AS "TOKYO KID," "YAWARA, AND KAWA NO NAGARE NO YOU NI." IN JULY 2022, JUSTIN KLUNK, A FORMER BAND MEMBER IN GRATEFUL CRANE ENSEMBLE'S SHOWS, PERFORMED A SMOOTH JAZZ CONCERT, "GUIDE ME HOME," BENEFITTING GRATEFUL CRANE. THE CONCERT FEATURED SAXOPHONIST KLUNK, WHO GREW UP IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA'S JAPANESE AMERICAN COMMUNITY, AND ALSO INCLUDED VOCALISTS CHEESA, A FINALIST ON "THE VOICE, AND ANNIE DINGWALL. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, GRATEFUL CRANE ENSEMBLE PERFORMED THEIR "MEMORIES" CONCERTS FOR JAPANESE AMERICAN SENIORS WITH ALZHEIMER'S AND DEMENTIA IN LOS ANGELES AREA NIKKEI NURSING HOMES, INCLUDING MEMORY CARE WARDS AND SPECIAL CARE UNITS WITHIN THE NURSING HOMES. THE CONCERT SERIES FOR SENIORS ARE 30-MINUTE CONCERTS FOR AUDIENCES AS LARGE AS 100 AND AS SMALL AS ONE PERSON LYING IN HER BED AT A NURSING HOME AND INCLUDED NOSTALGIC SONGS AND MUSIC, SUCH AS TRADITIONAL JAPANESE SONGS FROM RESIDENTS' CHILDHOODS, AND SONGS FROM GRATEFUL CRANE'S "CAMP DANCE AND MISORA HIBARI SHOW, AS WELL AS "NATSUKASHI NO KAOUHAKU UTA GASSEN," A NOSTALGIC SPOOF OF JAPAN'S NEW YEAR'S EVE SINGING CONTEST. THE SERIES WAS ALSO PERFORMED IN FRESNO AND SAN FRANCISCO.
