Part 3 - Line 4a
THIS YEAR THE NATIONAL MPD FOUNDATION FOCUSED ESPECIALLY ON TWO AREAS: SOCIAL NETWORKING AND RESEARCH INTO NATURAL TRIGGERS FOR MYELOPROLIFERATIVE DISEASE. THE NATIONAL MPD FOUNDATION CONTINUED ITS RESEARCH THIS YEAR INTO ESSENTIAL THROMBOCYTHEMIA THAT IS MARKED BY THE CALR MUTATION . AS HAS BEEN NOTED IN A 2014 NEJM ARTICLE, MOST PATIENTS WITH ESSENTIAL THROMBOCYTHEMIA OR PRIMARY MYELOFIBROSIS WITHOUT THE JAK2 MUTATION HAVE AN ACQUIRED MUTATION IN THE CALR GENE ENCODING CALRETICULIN. WITH THIS SCIENTIFIC FINDING CONFIRMED, THE NMPD FOUNDATION CONTINUED ITS RESEARCH IN THIS AREA BOTH THROUGH CONTACT WITH MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS AS WELL AS VIA OUTREACH AND RESEARCH COMPILATION. IN ADDITION THE FOUNDATION KEPT WATCH ON CLINICAL TRIALS THAT COULD FURTHER THE KNOWLEDGE BASE RELATED TO THIS RARE DISEASE PROCESS.
THROUGH OUTREACH TO MANY HEALTH RELATED SOCIAL NETWORKS, THE FOUNDATION WAS ABLE TO IDENTIFY LARGE POPULATIONS OF PATIENTS ARE EXPERIMENTING WITH ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS FOR ESSENTIAL THROMBOCYTHEMIA, POLYCYTHEMIA VERA AND MYELOFIBROSIS.
COMPLEMENTING THIS EFFORT WAS A TELEPHONE SURVEY OF MANY ALTERNATIVE DOCTORS WHO ARE USING ANTIANGIOGENIC DIETS, NUTRITION AND OTHER ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT MECHANISMS IN AN ATTEMPT TO REDUCE PLATELET PROLIFERATION AND SUBSEQUENTLY REDUCE INFLAMMATION IN THE BODY.
