A STATE CONVENTION IS HELD ANNUALLY TO PROVIDE TRAINING FOR STUDENT JOURNALISTS AND JOURNALISM TEACHERS AND TO RECOGNIZE STUDENT AND TEACHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS. DURING THE FISCAL YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2023 1,366 INDIVIDUALS ATTENDED.
THE ORGANIZATION AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS TO STUDENT JOURNALISTS AND ADVISORS TO ENCOURAGE EDUCATION IN JOURNALISM. THE ORGANIZATION HAS AN ENDOWMENT FUND WHOSE REVENUES ARE USED TO HELP FUND THE SCHOLARSHIPS. DURING THE FISCAL YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2023, 18 CASH SCHOLARSHIPS TOTALING 6,050 AND 2 CONVENTION REGISTRATIONS WERE AWARDED TO INDIVIDUALS, 1 GRANT OF 500 WAS MADE TO A SCHOOL, AND THE ORGANIZATION CONTRIBUTED NOTHING TO ITS ENDOWMENT FUND.
THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDED CRITIQUE SERVICE FOR MEMBERS AND PROVIDED GUIDELINES ON HOW TO IMPROVE THEIR PUBLICATIONS. DURING THE FISCAL YEAR ENDED 06/30/2023, 98 YEARBOOKS AND 17 OTHER STUDENT PUBLICATIONS AND ONLINE BROADCASTS WERE CRITIQUED. 651 INDIVIDUAL CONTESTS IN FALL 2022, 2,605 INDIVIDUAL CONTESTS IN SPRING 2023 AND 478 CONTESTS AT THE ANNUAL CONVENTION WERE ALSO CRITIQUED.
DISTRICT DIRECTORS CONDUCTED WORKSHOPS TO PROVIDE JOURNALISM INSTRUCTION FOR STUDENTS AND ADVISORS. DURING THE FISCAL YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2023 WORKHOPS WERE HELD IN 7 SCHOOL DISTRICTS. 2,542 INDIVIDUALS ATTENDED THE WORKSHOPS.
