SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 1987, THE FOUNDATION HAS SOUGHT TO IMPROVE THE CARE AND TREATMENT OF THOSE DIAGNOSED WITH END-STAGE ORGAN DISEASE THROUGH ADVANCES IN ORGAN TRANSPLANT MEDICINE AND EXPANSION OF SERVICES TO TRANSPLANT PATIENTS. APPROXIMATELY 2,300 PEOPLE BENEFITED FROM PROGRAMS.

PATIENT SERVICES-PROVIDES INFORMATION ABOUT FINANCING ORGAN TRANSPLANTATION, ORGAN DONATION MATERIAL, MONTHLY SUPPORT GROUPS, ADVOCACY ORGANIZATION REFERRALS, AS WELL AS SERVING AS THE PATIENT'S LIAISON TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI TRANSPLANT PROGRAM. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO PROVIDES FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO HELP PATIENTS WITH THEIR EMERGENCY NEEDS IN HOUSING, TRANSPORTATION AND GENERAL MAINTENANCE. THE ORGANIZATION UNDERWRITES SEVERAL MONTHLY TRANSPLANT PATIENT SUPPORT GROUPS AND MAINTAINS A PATIENT LOUNGE ON JACKSON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL'S TRANSPLANT FLOOR.
PUBLIC AWARENESS
EDUCATIONAL SERVICES-PUBLIC EDUCATION IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE ORGANIZATION'S DONOR AWARENESS PROGRAM. THE OVERALL OBJECTIVES OF PUBLIC EDUCATION EFFORTS ARE TO INCREASE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF THE NEED OF ORGAN DONORS, DISPEL CULTURAL MYTHS AND SUPERSTITIONS, CHANGE NEGATIVE ATTITUDES, INCREASE CONFIDENCE IN DONATIONS, ENLIST MORE POTENTIAL DONORS, AND OBTAIN MORE DONATED ORGANS. THESE OBJECTIVES ARE ACHIEVED THROUGH THE EDUCATION OF COLLEGE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ABOUT THE ORGAN DONATION PROCESS AND BY PROVIDING MATERIALS AND VOLUNTEER STAFF FOR HEALTH FAIRS AND COMMUNITY EVENT BOOTHS. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO FACILITATES ORGAN AND TISSUE DONATIONS BY SPONSORING TWO ANNUAL TRANSPLANT FORUMS TO PROVIDE INFORMATION TO MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS, HEALTH CARE WORKERS, PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES.
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES-ENHANCES THE RESEARCH EFFORTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI DIVISION OF TRANSPLANTATION BY FACILITATING DIRECTED GIFTS TO ASSIST IN THE FUNDING OF ITS RESEARCH PROGRAMS.
