THE MISSION OF THE LIGHTHOUSE IS TO PROVIDE PERSONS WHO ARE BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED WITH THE SKILLS NEEDED TO ACHIEVE THEIR MAXIMUM INDEPENDENCE.

1,336 PEOPLE WHO ARE VISUALLY IMPAIRED AND BLIND, THEIR FAMILIES, PROFESSIONALS, THE GENERAL PUBLIC AND LOCAL EMPLOYERS BENEFITED THIS YEAR FROM LIGHTHOUSE PROGRAMS. OUR INDEPENDENT LIVING ADULT PROGRAM PROVIDED REHABILITATION INSTRUCTION AND GUIDANCE THAT HELPED 268 INDIVIDUALS TO ACQUIRE SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE TO MANAGE THEIR LIVES AS ADULTS TO LIVE MORE INDEPENDENTLY IN THEIR HOMES AND COMMUNITIES WITH A MAXIMUM DEGREE OF SELF-DIRECTION. VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION PROVIDED JOB PREPAREDNESS TRAINING FOR 47 VISUALLY IMPAIRED ADULTS INCLUDING BRAILLE, USE OF ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY AND COMPUTERS. TRANSITION PROGRAMS PROVIDE YEAR ROUND TRAINING AND SERVICES TO TEENAGERS TO PREPARE THEM FOR THE TRANSITION FROM HIGH SCHOOL TO THE WORKFORCE OR COLLEGE. EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAMS ENHANCE ALL AREAS OF CHILD DEVELOPMENT FOR CHILDREN BIRTH THROUGH FIVE YEARS OF AGE AND THEIR FAMILIES. INDUSTRY PROGRAMS PROVIDE DIRECT, PAID COMPETITIVE EMPLOYMENT TO PERSONS WHO ARE LEGALLY BLIND. PRODUCT ASSEMBLY AND PACKAGING IS PERFORMED AND SOLD TO GOVERNMENT AND COMMERCIAL CUSTOMERS. CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS PROVIDE RECREATIONAL AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES TO CHILDREN AGES 5-13 WHO ARE VISUALLY IMPAIRED. LIGHTHOUSE ALSO HAS A LOW VISION STORE TO PURCHASE ADAPTIVE AIDS.
