CIVIL LIBERTIES DEFENSE CENTER (CLDC) EDUCATES THE GENERAL PUBLIC ABOUT THEIR RIGHTS AND PRIVILEGES UNDER THE US CONSTITUTION AND PROVIDES FREE LEGAL SUPPORT TO CLIMATE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE ACTIVISTS.

THE CIVIL LIBERTIES DEFENSE CENTER'S "JUSTICE IN ACTION" PROGRAM 1. PROVIDES LEGAL DEFENSE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL JUSTICE ACTIVISTS AND MOVEMENTS; AND 2. PROTECTS CIVIL LIBERTIES THROUGH IMPACT LITIGATION. 2021 PROGRAM PRIORITIES INCLUDED REPRESENTATION FOR CLIMATE, RACIAL JUSTICE, AND INDIGENOUS RIGHTS ACTIVISTS FACING CRIMINAL CHARGES AND FOR ADVOCATES AND COMMUNITIES DEFENDING THEMSELVES FROM CORPORATE-DRIVEN STRATEGIC LAWSUITS AGAINST PUBLIC PARTICIPATION (SLAPPS), AND PROACTIVE CIVIL RIGHTS LITIGATION FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE ADVOCATES HARMED BY EXCESSIVE POLICE FORCE.


CLDC'S "DISSENT AND DEMOCRACY" PROGRAM EDUCATES AND EMPOWERS ACTIVISTS AND THEIR ATTORNEYS WITH KNOWLEDGE OF THE LAWS PERTAINING TO DISSENT. 2021 PROGRAM PRIORITIES INCLUDED ONLINE AND IN-PERSON "KNOW YOUR RIGHTS" TRAININGS, CONSULTATION FOR NON-PROFT ORGANIZATION ON INTERNAL PRACTICES AND RISK ASSESSMENT AND COLLABORATION WITH LEGAL COALITIONS AND NETWORKS TO BROADLY DISSEMNATE THIS INFORMATION. WE EXPANDED THE ACCESSIBILITY OF OUR PROGRAMS BY PROVING ASL INTERPRETATION FOR ALL WEBINARS AND OFFERING PRO BONO ORGANIZATION MEMBERSHIPS TO VOLUNTEER-DRIVEN ADVOCACY GROUPS LED BY PEOPLE FROM HISTORICALLY MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES.
