GEORGIA JUSTICE PROJECT (GJP) STRENGTHENS OUR COMMUNITY BY DEMONSTRATING A BETTER WAY TO REPRESENT AND SUPPORT INDIVIDUALS IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM AND REDUCE BARRIERS TO REENTRY. GJP PROMOTES INNOVATIVE CHANGE THROUGH DIRECT LEGAL REPRESENTATION, POLICY ADVOCACY, EDUCATION AND COALITION BUILDING.

CRIMINAL REPRESENTATION: GJP REPRESENTS INDIGENT CRIMINALLY ACCUSED IN THE METRO-ATLANTA AREA. WE PROVIDE FULL CRIMINAL DEFENSE FREE OF CHARGE FOR SELECTED CLIENTS. CRIMINAL CLIENTS ALSO PARTICIPATE IN SOCIAL SERVICE SUPPORTS. WE HANDLE ABOUT 90 CRIMINAL CASES PER YEAR RANGING FROM MISDEMEANOR TO SERIOUS FELONIES.CRIMINAL RECORDS REPRESENTATION: GJP PROVIDES ASSISTANCE TO THOSE WHOSE CRIMINAL RECORD IS CREATING A BARRIER TO EMPLOYMENT, HOUSING, EDUCATION OR OTHER BENEFITS. WE PROVIDE EDUCATION REGARDING CRIMINAL RECORDS AND RIGHTS, CORRECTION OF RECORDS IF NEEDED AND EXPUNGEMENT OF RECORDS WHEN ALLOWED UNDER GEORGIA LAW. WE ALSO ADVOCATE WITH EMPLOYERS AND HOUSING ON BEHALF OF THOSE WITH CRIMINAL HISTORIES. WE PROVIDE THIS SERVICE TO CLIENTS FREE OF CHARGE TO ABOUT 500 CLIENTS PER YEAR. SOCIAL SERVICES:GJP PROVIDES SUPPORT SERVICES TO BOTH CRIMINAL DEFENSE AND CRIMINAL RECORDS CLIENTS AS NEEDED. WE PROVIDE COUNSELING, EMPLOYMENT SUPPORT AND OTHER SOCIAL SUPPORTS. WE PROVIDE VISITATION TO CLIENTS IN PRISON OR JAIL. WE ALSO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO CLIENT FAMILIES THROUGH THREE EVENTS DURING THE YEAR. WE HAVE 3 SOCIAL WORKERS ON STAFF WHO WORK WITH OVER 500 CLIENTS AND FAMILY MEMBERS. ADVOCACY/POLICY:GJP SEEKS TO IMPROVE THE LAWS IN GEORGIA THAT CREATE COLLATERAL CONSEQUENCES FOR THOSE WITH CRIMINAL RECORDS. BY CHANGING THE LAWS, WE HOPE TO ALLOW MORE PEOPLE ACCESS TO EMPLOYMENT, HOUSING, EDUCATION AND OTHER BENEFITS. IN FISCAL YEAR 2021, GJP GAVE OVER 90 PRESENTATIONS TO 4,000 ATTENDEES.
